Yeah the 4" is just about right on the IS to get it over the edge of the cat but any further would contact the mechanism that moves the cat 'sled' back and forth, on mine there is only about 1/8" of gap at the end of the probe. You can't see that in the pic though, only when the cat handle moves.

Cat working and 4" cat probe on the IS (above the front door). Going to be different for the AS of course, if nothing is moving in the way though should make things a lot simpler! You can see the radiator sagging and scaling too with all the heat of the cat. I wonder if the AS will have similar issues. I know the new radiators have stainless shields to help with the scaling but not sure how long they'll last with the sagging. Might not be very expensive wear item, I didn't ask, they are replacing my current one for free.

You would think! This year is even more dramatic given the Deflategate drama the whole world had to endure. Tom Brady... oldest NFL player in the league, wants to play till he's 45.

PS I get all my sports information from my wife, she's the sports nut.

So I picked up a Condar CAT Probe from the nice folks at Woodstock, all cut to 8" length. It comes with a nice little probe washer to insert into the threaded outside wall of the stove once the stove nut is removed, and it also came with a round magnet that I'm trying to figure out where to put that? Any ideas? Inside stove wall?

Not sure what the magnet is for. Any ideas guys?

I'm gonna guess you hold it against the stove and the push the probe thru that and the hole in the stove. The threaded hole is slightly larger than the probe so there's a bit of probe wiggle room.

    Just my edumacated guess.

The elongated stove washer upper right in 2nd pic, in the plastic is for inserting into the threaded hole where the bolt is removed. But the magnet has me confused. Directions say nothing about it.

I've read that guys use those magnets on the IS, between the stove body and the thermometer dial. The IS probes are a little loose in the hole, so the magnet holds it in place. I run mine without a magnet, but have considered trying this.

On the IS that insert (elongated stove washer as you call it) doesn't fit into the hole when you remove the bolt. If it's the same as the IS then I'm correct about the magnet.

Yeah usually the probes are just a loose slip fit into the hole, the magnet holds the unit to the body of the stove better.

You guys are so smart! No wonder I hang around here. :)

That little insert doesn't fit the hole and the magnet does hold the probe dial to the stove nicely. About a 60 sec.install. :) I'll take a pic or two before I start the stove a bit later.

Here are pics of my probe install.

It took 5 minutes once the probe showed up at my door. Just remove the small "probe bolt" on the left hand side of the stove and insert the probe. I bought this one from Woodstock, cost me $40 with the shipping.

This is a pic of the install and my first fire afterwards.

It works great. The CAT didn't get as hot as I thought it might, but I've only last night to go by. Also, I haven't cleaned the CAT yet, all season, so it may be time. But just being able to identify that type of issue is reason enough to want one. ...well, that and I'm a gear guy.

I did a quick cleaning with the spray method and it worked great. Cat Temps improved immediately.

I heard you on the gear guy thing. I've got 3 thermometers on my stove. Plus and IR on the mantle.

Looks like a nicer solution than the IS since the cat isn't on a moving sled and also enough room to have the probe dial oriented properly and still be able to read it lol.

Is the radiator a different material in the AS than the IS? Do AS owners experience the same flaking the ideal users are seeing?

I forgot to include a pic of the IR, but I've definitely got one. We're tied. :)

Hmmm. What did it read? Can you see the cat looking in the stove anywhere, or do you have to lift the lid? How brightly was the cat glowing when you got this reading?

It seemed to be running steady state at about 950'F when I checked it, but that may not have been peak. I had company at the time, and forgot to go check it. Now that I have the house to myself again I'll recheck it sometime today.
