To respond to the initial post, I have had this happen, yes it does stink. Air the house out and run the stove. When it gets hot and burning again, after a day or two the smell will be gone.

Why are the pellets in the ash pan? That's the problem.... If the stove is bouncing them out into the pan? That's an Enviro flaw. That's been known to happen to many stoves.

Not the pellets fault.. Any pellets that don't have constant air, will smoulder. Any pellet....

I agree with many of the posts, and I thank you for those that actually took this serious. I had a fire in the ash pan, but now how do I avoid this happening again. I know there is has been modifications in the past, but I should not have to do this. This is my 2nd full year burning, and my only problem that you all have ever heard from me was when I had all the leaks, and enviro and the dealer finally got together and fixed the issue. I understand any pellet could do this, so I guess I was so mad this morning, I should of started another thread explaining my displeasure with lignetics. It is freezing cold in here, I have air purifiers running, and I am not afraid to admit, I do not want to run the stove again and experience a repeat of last night. It was kind of ironic that i shut the stove down, fearing this situation due to a power outage, so I shut the stove down correctly, and It still happens, what are the chances.

That would be my story! My problem is I had to have my butt kicked before I did anything about it.

If I might, what is the cleaning schedule? You did a normal shut down, pro active, very good. Do you have your stove connected to outside air, or does it draw the air for combustion from the room? That is one of the most common causes of smoke entering a room during a shut down. Another question, was the wind blowing when this occurred.
The thing I have no answer for is why the un burned pellets in the ash pan. For that, I would call Enviro and ask if your settings could have anything to do with this. What has me confused is that I am sure you have shut your stove down before without a problem. What is different this time?

The stove is connected to outside air, with a 3 feet rise in vent pipe before exiting the home. I am probably ocd when cleaning the stove, top to bottom. As far as shut down, I do what I always do and just push the button and it runs for 30 mins, and then turns off and that is it. That is why I am so confused, I did nothing different this time.

If I recall correctly It was freezing rain and sleet, I do not believe it was real windy out at the time.

I do understand your being anxious. I doubt this will happen again if the stove stays running. You could include inspecting the ash bin before you walk away from the stove, that is until you are able to have a conversation with an Enviro tech. I am thinking a draft issue related to the rate the pellets are being fed. You said you are anal about cleaning. I trust that includes the exhaust venting. The vast majority of problems are with cleaning. Hope you are able to talk with a tech who is experienced and willing to listen. Good luck.

A month after I bought my first stove I had the damm thing so plugged with ash it would barely run on #1 but the burn pot was overflowing and I had a fire in the ash pan without me knowing it. Luckily the stove kept limping along and I didn't get much smoke in the house… I discovered the fire when I noticed the ash pan handle had melted!

I have contacted Enviro on the loose pellet getting into the ash pan deal. never got a reply. Brokenwing, I'd contact a rep and give em heck!

The fix is to contain the pellets with added wings on the burnpot liner or fingers on the burnpot fire grate. It keeps the loose pellet in the liner on initial fill. Also makes the start up less smokey IMHO.

I took the idea from the warmland PS45 stove.
    warm land firepot.jpg

It has wings on the burnpot liner and fingers that extend into the liner from the burn grate. I opted for the fingers from the burn grate. I welded 4 steel extensions on to the burn grate that extend into the liner. Unfortunately they didn't last and eroded off due to heat and salts in the pellets. Next try was 2 plates that bolt to the burn grate and are made of SS. Here is my initial print(see PDF). Some trimming is required to complete the install. So far works excellent! The SS hasn't corroded in 3 seasons. Hope it helps.

Like I said, Don't shut it down if you don't have too soooo quickly. Let it run on its lowest setting for an hour or 2 or 3 even. This will let the smoldering pellets die out in the ash pan. Make sure they are out if at all possible. If you shut it off too quick there is a chance they will smolder after a start up. See the info imacm,an posted about the warning in the manual.

Now that the power is stable you should be able run this. But get something going with your dealer on the issue or contact Enviro directly and give them heck. There is a way to resolve this. but without info from the burners and lots of them. It may never be resolved. It seems the cast versions and the Regency units are the most effected by the pellets in the ash pan.

Sorry you have had so many issues with this unit. IMHO I wouldn't be surprised if you ask them to remove it and give you something else in its place.

Thank you Jay for all your suggestions, I greatly appreciate it. I will be making some phone calls and see what happens. Enviro is hard to deal with mostly because they only like to talk to the dealers, but I will see if I can get through to them!

If they make it difficult to work directly with them, file a complaint with the BBB. That'll wake 'em up.

Enviro is similar to Harman. They want you to go through your dealer with all issues.

I had a good contact(Judy) that was good at pulling strings. But she has left the company(retired and moved to the warmer climate). I'll see if I can find Jory's email addy. He was awesome to deal with.

She got burned out when the cast hit the market. In her words "it needed more testing", But management insisted it met it's release date. I don't own the cast so the strings she pulled weren't for me per say. It was for all the peeps I headed her way when dealers refused to do the right thing! :p

But she did stop returning my emails and never said good bye! :emb:

I'm surprised that Don hasn't offered his "services"....he supposedly sells Enviro stoves & parts. He offered members a discount over on the "other forum".
