Oh yeah, I LOVE that site - so much great information! Just because you never know what's going to happen with any internet site, when I first found out about it I copied all of the information it has on every Stihl chainsaw listed...
Thanks John. I'm anxious the get the saw back together, but I'm waiting on my thrust washers to come back from the machine shop and the seal & gasket kit is on backorder. So, with the exception of the bearings I'm basically missing the internal parts I need to even get started. Oh well, thankfully (I think?!?!) I have plenty of other saw projects that need attention and aren't waiting on parts . . . only time.
Okay Beau, I happen to have some inside info that you have the muffler you needed, so let's see that Contra in action....
Lol! Saw work always goes slow for me while I try to find time to work on them... My seal & gasket set was on backorder and just came in last Friday, so I'll be picking it up this week. Also, I don't actually have the muffler yet - I've been out of town, and the muffler-middleman is about an hour drive from me, so I'm hoping to find time to go get it later this week . . . more importantly, my yard is ready for it's first mowing of the year, but first the Hustler is due up for an oil change & blade sharpening. I really do have a strong dislike for the spring. Too many outdoor chores, and I always seem to do a lot of running around and am out of town many/most weekends.
I actually have an update! Things have slowed down for a minute, so I've started making some progress on putting this joker back together. Each evening I've been spending some time here & there cleaning parts & reassembling. I think I may be able to finish it up by next weekend. Took more than a little time to get the stuck rings off of the piston & clean everything up, but at least that's behind me... As soon as it's back together I'll update once again.
Nope. Kroil and and prying with a pick (very carefully) to get the old rings out and then used a section of the old rings to clean the grooves in the piston.
I can't say much, I have a minty 064 with a hole in the crankcase in a box with a nos crankcase, has been there at least 3 years, maybe 4.... Life, work, and family sometimes really limits shop time. I know it's not eating anything like it is and I know it's all there, it's one of those someday projects...
I hear ya. I wanted to keep this Contra at the top of the list due to the help from FHC members and this thread. I have an 041 Super I want to rebuild from the ground up. Have all new/NOS stuff from gaskets to bearings to a piston. Been sitting in a box on the bottom of the shelf since 2012. One of these days though!
I'm in the same boat with this McCulloch BP-1. Every step along the way is like playing roulette.....so far I've hit every number. With a huge thanks to Redfin. Because if he hadn't used his ultrasonic cleaner, I'd have never gotten the rings off the piston. Yes, they were stuck that bad. On the bad side, I now have to go purchase an ultrasonic cleaner of my own. Just because...... Looking forward to seeing your "S" together, NewToStihl! I know I love my Contra, it's a brute!
Good to see you, brother! Hey, there have been so many people that have done wonderful things for me here on this site, I'd help you guys out in a heartbeat! I'm gonna look for a larger model, so I can do whole cases and jugs in it!!
Good to be here.. I've been lurking.. Throw in a comment or two when warranted.. An ultrasonic parts cleaner is on my list of things to get... Unfortunately that list is pretty damm long!!
A few quick shots of the current state of the reassembly process. So far it has new bearings, seals, fuel tank gasket, oil tank gasket, and NOS throttle trigger. After what I've learned about the Contra, mostly from Brad (hdtoolmkr765), it's clear that this is a combination of saws - two or more. The case assembly and bottom plate are the later 'cream' color with serial number is 246,217. The other parts (clutch cover, starter assembly, oil tank, rear handle, etc.) are the earlier 'blue' color. Also, the oil pump and oil tank lack the manual oiling function which Brad tells me joined the club in the 155,xxx range. Either way, it's super cool and I'm anxious for it to breathe again!
