I can make a semi chisel chain cut right with square ground. It won't last as long as semi usually does. There's ways to maximize cutting speed for any chain style but you have to decide if the trade offs are worth it.
I swear the points on round chisel are just as fragile, if not more so than the points on the square filed stuff..
Round chisel is the most fragile from what I've seen. I guess I'll get to do some square filing a lot if I keep running it. I've accumulated a lot of semi here lately.
I can make it more durable by switching to a 25 degree top plate, and leave at least 20% of the file above the plate when filing, but it slows it down a bit.. "Trade off"...
Is outside/in only a technique for square grind? How about I provide one of these experts here all my chains, they can shoot a video, we can all learn?.... for the sake of this forum of course... has nothing to do with the fact that I'm pretty terrible at filing.
I don't know how you could go inside out and keep those angles without bloody knuckles. I might do one for you but not all. I have enough to keep up with all mine and no grinders now.
How about pressure on the file stroke? Scale of 1-10 maybe with 1 being no pressure and 10 being pressing against the cutter as much as possible
Ideally you should actually feel the file cutting away material. If the file is not cutting well with moderate pressure applied (say 3 or 4 on your 10 scale), then the file is clogged or dull. Rotate the file and try again or toss it and start with a new file.
I was digging through some stuff last night. Got a pic of a semi-chisel chain that Levi and I treated like a race chain.. This thing will remove a lot of material, but takes something along the 70+cc in power to pull it... I think I had planned on letting Andy the Dodgegeek use it on his 064 since it was set up for an 18" stihl bar..
I like this site... Loads fast on my phone out there in the sticks... Must be a little more streamlined??
Wish they had a tapatalk app for it. This is a pretty good thread. When I get back home I'll try to get some more pictures of milling chains and such. I don't know if I have any more race chains there or not. I know I have some 32" loops that are pretty fast for work chain.
