HF has an IR thermometer on offer this month. Maybe I should invest in one.

I noticed one chip on the top of the 30.
Called Englander and was sent a can of high heat spray paint.
But all I need is just a small touchup.

Very quick response and a joy to speak/deal with.

    Thanks Englander!

Yes, they are quick to answer. I had a few things about my Madison and they are great on customer service.

I am really liking this thing, it is quite the heater. I have no doubt that we will get more heat from less wood than we did from the Allnighter, and make less smoke doing it. I also have noted that it is easier to light than I first thought (I guess I learned how), and is very controllable, as others suggested it would be.

Off course I haven't really packed it yet, but even so it hold coals overnight better than the Allnighter.

    Total win.

So, latest is that I am not convinced the draft is good enough to keep the stove happy. It is harder to get good fire going than the Allnighter was. Granted, the Allnighter was pretty much a box with a vent on it, no baffles (except the one I added), no burn tubes, etc. so it breathed easy.

The 30 usually has to have the door left ajar for a little while, or else it will keep a small smokey fire, not really flare up. And it takes a long time to get to a decent STT (400 or so) or secondary burns. I estimate the total (floor to cap) at just under 15 feet. Would adding another 3 feet likely improve this enough to notice? I am burning 2-3 year old pine and aspen right now, MC less than 10%.

But when it is going, it is fantastic! A few nights ago, I added a couple of splits (aspen or pine, I forget which) to the small fire before going to bed, and in the morning, I found an adequate coal bed to relight the fire! That maybe happened once with the Allnighter. I also can keep a "low burn" with mostly secondaries going much longer than I dreamed of with the Allnighter, just throwing another split on occassionally. It is a great stove.

Probably. It will get better as temps drop too. I don't recall, is that a 6" chimney?
