Use a mirror to reflect the flashlight's beam into the stove pipe.

Of course, yours is outside the house so maybe there would be enough daylight once you pull off the bottom plug of the tee?

Don't understand why you've put this off all "off season" but there is no time better than the present.

But if you can use a poly or regular wire brush, you will save many dollars and they still do a good job the same as they've always done.

I have heard the wire brushes can scratch the SS chimney and possibly make it easier for creosote to cling to the inside walls. A lot of people here were touting the soot eaters but if the poly brushes will work...

Awww! For me? Shucks! Tee hee!

Get that chimney inspected today? Got that extension on yet?
Don't worry about scratching the inside of your pipe...it's not like you'll be grinding away on it with any type of brush. Just a few quick plunges, right? That's yet another benefit of dry wood.

Ok, glad you ask. Yes, I inspected the chimney. I was able to shine a light up to the top of the chimney. What I saw was dull soot; it did not look shinny.

    Photos:

    tee_cap.jpg
This was the bottom cap for the tee; dry soot particles, a leaf and stink bugs, they get in everywhere. I am wondering if they have gotten into the stove as well.

    tee.jpg
It basically lo0ked like this to the top of the chimney. More stink bugs. Clearest I could get with the camera; it only has auto focus.

Now about adding the section to the chimney

    chimney.jpg
That is a three foot, two foot and one foot sections plus the cap. I have a three foot section I want to add. It scares me to be standing on the edge of the roof. I don't have any safety harness here or even just rope. I guess I could leave the two foot section on and try taking the one foot and cap off, adding them to the three foot section then try to hoist them above my head into place. I am also thinking about putting in a Craig's List advert and just see if I can hire someone to do it for me.

Can you make a chicken ladder out of some scrap lumber, with a platform built on it, that brings you close to level and gains you a foot or two in height off the gutter?
Before you ask- a chicken ladder hooks over the ridge and runs down the slope of the roof. Tie it off.
Tie yourself off to the roof, remove the cap, connect the cap to the 3' section, plug it on to the 1' section....
Just thinking out loud. You may not have the materials for the job, or the gumption to tie yourself to the building.
But- with a well thought out plan, you can do it.

Your chimney looks really good and clean Kimberly. Why do you want to add length to the chimney? If it's currently above the roof ridge it should be fine, especially being right at the edge like it is.

It should be two feet higher than anything within ten feet of it.

K wants to add another section to it just to increase the draft. (once its up to temp)

The height requirement as listed in the stove manual; Madison from England Stove Works, is not met. So that is why I was going to add a section. The chimney is a bit short according to the manual. Plus, there are two 90s, one in the flue and then the tee in the chimney. From what I understand, that effectively shortens my chimney even more.

Plus, I have already brought the section and too late to try and return it; I got it way back in the summer but too scared to try and install it.

Just remember, the stove can work just fine with a shorter than recommended height. Remember the "two feet higher than anything closer than ten feet" rule though.
