I'm a little surprised it was that dirty. I tore mine apart today as well and I had just a light coating of ash on the inside of the pipe. IIRC you don't run an OAK. Could that maybe be the difference.

I happy that the pipe was only coated with ash no creosote , and that's with 2 90's to get it to the chimney and one to get it out . Pics may make it look worse may be a 1/16 of an inch or less thick .

IMO, those are pretty heavy build-ups. Not sure I'd let mine get to that point. I probably wouldn't let mine go more than about 1 1/2 - 2 tons before cleaning with Lint-Eater.

I hear ya Pete , this was the first year so you see what happens and that is a 4" pipe not a 3" so the stove was'nt chocking itself , but I prolly will pull the pipe mid season for a cleaning , now that I have a bench mark .

Especially important with the # of 90's you have.....even though it's 4", all that drag can't help.

Stupid question time. I thought I had bought a lint eater online, but I opened the box today to clean the P61a's exhaust, and found I had gotten a soot eater. Which, I thought would be fine. However, I couldn't get it to go past the 45 elbow that is about 2' from the outlet. So, here is the question: is the soot eater better? The rods look the same so I don't see how they will go thru - especially the points where the rods connect. Maybe it is a different brand that other people are using (versus Gardus). I don't mind getting something else, but don't want to waste another $25 if I don't have to. EDIT: I see I can get a lint eater Jr. kit (that will attach to the kit I already have for about $15 - but would like confirmation that is what I need.

And, as an aside, the P43 exhaust is so clean it is still shiny, so I didn't bother with that (I did do the LBT on it earlier in the year) . And yes, it is pipe I see. However, The P61a has a much longer exhaust and I can see that it isn't shiny even after LBT, so want to do preventive maintenance if possible.

B....I have the Deflecto dryer duct cleaning rods that are really stiff and I was able to get that through a very short section of two 90's on my stove...I had a section of rod attached to my drill. Not sure if that helps you out of not.
