Yeah, I don't know how it happens sometimes but it seems like all of a sudden the flame goes away and the cat takes over gorging itself and gets really hot. Sometimes it will get hot enough to ignite the flames back but not always. The stove can probably handle it but it can get scary.

Ah, but we won't forget that start in Fairbanks. Could this be another one? I hope not.

jdonna, in the colder temperatures, like below 10 degrees daytime, we will then run a bit more draft. This afternoon we've had it a 1.5. Right now it is full open because we are almost down to the all coaling stage. This will keep the coals from building too high. At night, even below zero we'll keep the draft at .75 and it seems to work nicely.

Except that Dennis does not open the firebox door. We just give it a bit more draft.

No science about it Steve. If you open the draft more, the stove top will not be as high but the sides and front will be higher. To get the most heat from the beast, keep some flame in it. You are right that it is sensitive with the draft setting. We have had a couple back puffs but it was our own fault and we also have a very short chimney.

As the cat gets older, it seems to take just a bit longer to fire off. We tend to set the draft at 1.5 or 2 for the first setting as we turn it down. That does not stay there long though and it is interesting that as soon as I get it down to 1 or to .75, that is when the cat kicks in. But if I don't turn it down, then it takes longer for the cat to ignite. Strange, but it works.

If I fill the box with that bone dry elm, I generally do not have a problem with coals. The red oak and hackberry can leave a bit of coals in the morning. Upside of a tall stack is you can crank the air open and chew down coals really fast.

I stuffed the stove up with 2-4 in rounds/branch wood this morning, that was kind of a fun experiment. Got some nice heat out of it. We left the draft a touch under 1 and it was really ripping. I guess the question in mind was, if you only had dry tops of wood could the stove still heat the house? Answer was yes.

My beta unit just got installed last week. Unfortunately I am traveling so the oil burner is keeping my pipes from freezing at the moment. Here is a picture of the newer air control markings.

I knew it was something like that. Fortunately for me it worked.
