    Hello

Now that I built a little workshop over the past year,
I have been trying to figure out what is needed to work on pellet stoves? There seems to be all types of tools and setups that would really help.

    What do you suggest?
A wood or metal lathe to make custom stove handles?
Those Harman Pellet Stove wood handles are nice but not fancy?

    Metal Lathe
    metal lathe

I just changed the plastic ceiling light sockets to sockets with a 3 prong outlet so an outlet would be handy.
Also added a stove iphone cam to see if it fires up after turning it on remotely
There is a DeWalt Compressor, an air grinder and media blaster

Pic 1 - Light with 3 prong socket
Pic 2-4 - Shop iPhone Cam -- Where there is smoke, there is fire. LOL

    Possible Suggestions?
Pic 5 - Tig Welder -- A Tig welder does not burn thru slim sheet metal like a Mig welder might
Pic 6-7 - Plasma Cutter for making metal brackets and cutting apart bad welds.

Here I have at my disposal a 9 x 42 "Bridgeport type" vertical mill, a Takisawa engine lathe, a Miller 250 wire welder, a Jet band saw, air compressor, Oxy Acetylene torch.
Various other machine tools, drills and such and a lot of hand tool, air tools and the usual compliment of wrenches and such.

Not excited about turning wood in the engine lathe, but I have done it.

I just cover the ways and use sharp high speed steel tools to cut the wood.

Messy, but it gets it done.

I use the mill as a drill press a lot.

Can you make metal handles too?

    Hello
I just put in a 20 amp outlet for shop tools that take a little more juice like this dust collector.
Does anyone know if these collectors work well?

    Audio system a bit lacking.
Need a THX certified 7.1 minimum.

But then you will need some insulation to reduce echo.
    Then theater style recliners.
    Mmmm
You may also need to upgrade to 400 amp service.
Then a bathroom as your will never want to leave the room.

Already have a Yamaha 7.1 system with 2 subwoofers and 2 additional spatial speakers for a total of 9 speakers in the living room. No butt kickers just yet. :-( So nothing that fancy in the workshop.

Last week, to remove dust from stove cleaning and ventilate when painting, I installed a 180 CFM vent fan in the workshop. On cold or windy days, it cannot be done outside.
    See video

Seems to work best blowing out and exhausting the air.
I installed an AC outlet on the right side so no cords running down the wall. I hate that! LOL :)
Anyone else install one? Are they good?
    So far so good.

440 V 3 phase power to really kick AZZ

We can't get 3 phase here at the ranch, so I bought a Roto phase unit to run the mill and the lathe.

    It delivers 240 V 3 phase.

These are way cool if you need 3 phase power.

The unit consists of a 240 Volt 3 phase motor with the output shaft bobbed off (not needed)
A heavy capacitor to Start the motor and a few other wires and things.

The motor is wired with 2 of the winding's connected to the 240 V power and a Capacitor wired to the third winding.

When the unit is switched on the 2 power leads are energized and the capacitor kicks the 3 leg in the Azz to get the 3 phase motor rolling and up to speed.

Once up to speed the un-powered 3rd leg from the motor acts as a generator and provides the 3rd phase of input to the machine being operated.

This gives fast starts and on the fly reversing of the machines.

Inexpensive and very handy when ya need 3 phase power.

So many lovely machine tools require 3 phase power to operate.

Far better than re-powering with a standard 240 v motor.

Never leave home without one.

Yes, you do get much more power with 3 phase and with 440 volts you use a quarter of the amps than 120 volts so the electricity cost is a lot less, the motors are cheaper and the motor bearings last longer. However, It does not make that much of a difference to have 3 phase for motors under 5 HP.

    Hello
Well, I just got the 50 AMP 250 VAC Welder and/or Plasma Cutter outlet in the workshop wall today. :) A little confusing since all the wiring and main circuit panel and sub panels in my house were updated and have the seperated ground buss and neutral buss which meet the latest code requirements for metal body appliances and 4 wire plugs for the new safety standards!
So first I had to get the new 6-3 wire to not only be able to carry the 50 AMPs but since the ground wire is only 12 or 14 Guage, it cannot be used as the return on the 3 wire outlets for most welders and plasma cutters! If they all had 4 wire plugs like maybe they should? However 4 wires on metal case welders may have 4 wires and 4 prong plugs for safety someday and 6-3 will be necessary for these welders!
So I connected the 6-3 ground wire properly to the ground buss in my new panel and the neutral to the neutral buss but cannot connect the ground wire in the plastic 3 wire welder outlet box! If I ever get a 4 wire 4 prong welder, then the ground wire is there if I need it!

Wow that was confusing, I found out that for a welder with a 3 wire plug which most of them have, the neutral in the wall outlet (if there is one) is capped off and the bare ground must be connected to the 3rd prong. :)
