He was a no-show today. Looked like it was going to rain, so I get it. Hopefully Monday now. Didn't do me any good to get up at 6am.
Septic guy came by this afternoon for a look at things and suggested a different spot for the tank and field (one I had considered), which should be easier except the line from the house to the tank will run perpendicular to my gas and 220 lines to the shop. They'll hand dig there and either go on top or underneath those. The tank should be here at 8am along with the crew.
I was wrong about him taking off Sundays. My brother and I made a run down to Lake City for the day, and when I got home, he had been here digging for the lines going out to the pole barn. Looks like he may be running the septic line from the house to the tank under those lines.
Tank got here just before 8. The crew showed up about 7:15, and started digging the hole for the tank. Second time setting the tank, since the first one wasn't quite deep enough.
The 2 young guys (one is the septic/excavator's son) should be back soon to do the hookup from the house to the new system. Boss came by for a bit and while he was waiting, he spread out the leftover gravel on some of the drive.
Still have to wait for the Health Dept. guy to inspect before covering it, but this was a pretty simple system. Having the right machinery makes short work of this kind of stuff. ETA: They put straw over the field............
I am happy for you. Looks like a final resolution to an old problem. I am having a boil over. We have had a dry spring so I know it is a real issue. When my drain field was put in, all was fine, but then the folks I hired to do the grading around the house sloped the dirt over the drain-field covering one side in about 3 to 4 ft of dirt. It is my understanding that the drain field is to only a specific depth of cover. That was many years ago. I resolved it then by pulling the tub and wash machine off the drain field. All my gray water goes to a settling tank that is not part of the septic. My son's gray water goes to the the drain field. I am trying to convince my son to pull his gray water of the septic also. Either that, or I will have to have the drain field reconfigured.
When they started digging for the new line, they hit a couple of the existing ones, and effluent was pouring out of those for several minutes. Obviously, the old field was still not doing well. They told me the newer fields are aiming for 70/30. As in 70% evaporation and 30% drainage or infiltration into the ground. This field isn't anywhere near as deep as the old one. Septic guy also told me the old tank might have only been about 500 gallons.
The guy I had out to pump my tank said the sun has a lot to do with the health of a leach field - seemed strange to me. I guess the evaporation aspect makes sense though. I can see my neighbor's leach field in the spring when the grass starts to green 4 distinct lines in on the side of the house.
