Ding ding ding. Also sometimes specs the muffler on the same side as the carburetor with a heat shroud to keep the carburetor warm enough to prevent carburetor icing.

Y'all guys I'm sure by now realize I have never seen a snow blower in person! When we get snow we just wait it out :)

But that makes sense, boats don't have air filters either.

Update. The backordered crankshaft(made in USA ) came in and I rebuilt it all last night. I had to replace the woodruff key on the flywheel as I think I snapped it when removing the flywheel. All said and done I replaced the connecting rod, piston rings, belts, crankshaft and plug. The total was just about $200. I did some minor maintenance on it while it was all dissasembled. I took it out in the snow today and made one adjustment to the linkage that I had one little notch off. She purrs right along now. Thanks everyone for the help, and I gained a lot of small engine repair knowledge. Saved some coin too.

Thanks Ray. My young son helped with the air ratchet driver, good to have a set of nimble fingers around.

That's a great price! I wouldn't even fool with the other motor...Just run a high zinc content motor oil like Amsoils Z Rod oil... It's extra zinc is for flat tappet type motors like these.. Other motor would need to be ball honed and new piston also,,who knows, crank could even be bent as well... not worth it in my eyes...

Because they usually have a shroud set up so the carb gets some heat from the motor.. stops carb icing...

Flywheel key sheared most likely during the sudden stop... It's great experience but for 19 dollars more , I would have opted for brand new.. especially if the output shaft races in the case are worn,, that will eat up new seals...thus leak oil... Good job tackling the motor...

If you can get a Harbor Freight Predator engine to mate up then by all means put one on! They are one HECK of an engine. I put one on my Troy Bilt tiller and it is an awesome Honda knockoff.

AMSOIL actually makes a small engine specific oil. Fantastic stuff, I keep it in stock here.

I'm aware of that.. Since a lot of flat head small engines run flat tappets for lifters , I like the idea of running a high zinc oil such as the Z rod oil.. That's made for the old flat head car engines... Reading an article the zinc actual builds up a protective film on those high friction areas... I'm sure the small engine oil is great too...

The small engine oil is a high zinc formula as well. I use it in my old big block too as it is a hydraulic flat-tappet cam too.

Does it have as high a zinc content as the Z rod oil?

Specs between the Z Rod and small engine oil are pretty close, viscosity and four ball wear test.

I think Z-Rod is the highest, but for engines that never exceed 4000 RPM, (Big truck's BBC has HP all-in at 3600 RPM, ) I'm not overly worried. Coping with the higher temps and dirty running conditions small engines see is high on the list for me. Having excellent results so far with a couple commecial mowing guys. I do have one customer running Z-Rod in his Ural/Deniper/Cheng Jang (sp?) motorcycles which are notorious for wearing out poorly machined bearing and cam surfaces. After he switched oils, he stopped blowing up engines. :smoke: (He rides more miles than most people drive every year.)

He rides the Ural (Russian) more than any of them. I do know he plans to ride the Cheng Jang more this year. It's a 45 MPH machine .... on a good day, , but you gotta cut it some slack, it's nearly 60 years old!

He also has a Triumph torn apart in his living room, and a Suzuki GT750 ('74?) that he picked up last summer. All but the Triumph wear sidecars, all are neat bikes. Oh yeah, he's got a Rokon too!

Rokon's in nice shape! Friend years ago had a 340 Rokon trail bike that they ice raced with a side car...Centrifugal snow mobile type clutch, thing was a rocket... Before he made an Ice Racer out of it, I raced him from a dead stop with an R90S BMW cafe racer I had,,, he almost beat me, I had my hands full...
