Don't Take it personal Ruffrider . Sometimes things can be taken wrong especially on the internet. Stick around and you will see that this is the friendliest place around and the mods will step in if necessary. Overall we do a pretty good job policing ourselves. Gary
FYI: That discoloration seems normal. It actually has nothing to do with a weak gasket. I think it is just because that area experiences less air flow due to being "hidden" from any pulling of primary air. So the air doesn't have any self cleaning affect in that space around the gasket. That dirty steel area is tucked lower than the glass. Confused now?
For future readers: Since the NC 30's primary air enters at the front, the NC30 will have what the OP described as wood burning from the front to the rear. (sometimes with left-over coals laying both to the left and right at the end of a burn cycle.) Those are good coals for raking to the front and building the next fire on top of. During the burn, the back of the firebox will often appear dark too. This is natural. (but not always the case). You can stack your wood in a manner that will leave a nice gap down the center (middle) and you will get some air flow to the back. Even if you "block" the doghouse air with wood, you will notice that the air coming out of it will act like a high temp blow torch and cut a hole (tunnel) right down the center during the burn cycle. The splits will burn in the center and as they disappear, new/less burned wood will fall in to take it's place. And the process continues as the fire sort of "eats its' way" the the sides. (left and right) Enjoy!
To everyone thank you. From reading and learning I now make the tunnel, and also keep the dog house clear. Also stack the wood in there with the tunnel available and away from the house. Now I'm getting complete burns. All the way to the back. Tunnel of fire. In the morning the coals in the back are bright red, not like before being black and smoldering. Also marking that damper shaft has helped immensley. Now I run it between 1/4 and 1/3. Now she runs between 650 to 700 for about 2 hours then down to 600-650 for I don't know how long. This morning I woke up after stocking it at 9pm and beautiful coals were present, pipe was still in the good temp zone and the stove was just under 450. The best I ever had. Thanks to everyone. Thanks a lot.
Just talked to the wife and she said that after I stocked it at 6am she didn't touch it until 1pm and there was so much in there still. I only put about 6 pieces in too. She put only 4 pieces just to keep a flame. Too bad I warped the bottom after now figuring it out.
This is what I had left after stocking her last night at 945 it is now 430 the next day. Closed the door walked away by 1015 last night. Just flattened em out and she is already going again. Wow that is amazing.
Pull 'em up to the front of the box before loading. That's pretty impressive. Heck, maybe I should be getting tips from you. Seems like once the light went on, you got this down.
