Toys, I got toys, just not the kind you might like to play with. Gotta name your hobby toys OM. Lots of little places around.

Well, here is the latest in my saga of getting a fully functional set up for serving media over my network without having to leave the computer system powered up.

I just got through level 3 again and am awaiting the engineering gods to speaketh.

    Response from NETGEAR
    Hi David,

We are still checking this with our engineers. We will get back to you as soon as we have feedback.

    Thanks,
    Janice

Man that trouble ticket is getting long.

    Ain't embedded systems just great?

Did you folks know that a lot of the electronic crap out there can have its embedded software updated? Industrial strength it ain't and more of that crap is getting inserted in your vehicles.

They made a big mistook in several areas and their can handle xx,xxx files is incorrect.

My current loaded and usable media collection contains:

    ReadyDLNA status
    Audio files: 4994
    Video files: 326
    Image files: 0

I tried adding my photos and somewhere around a thousand the gateway rebooted. Funny things happen when you try storing a sql database in memory instead of on an external device.

The database supporting those files has 6902 detail table entries:

    Screenshot - 03142016 - 07:57:18 AM.png

    And 35,843 Object table entries:

    Screenshot - 03142016 - 07:56:38 AM.png

which requires 14,155,776 bytes to store.

There is 128MB of ram in the gateway and there is a lot more there than just this database.

The first unit a C3700 walked on the DNLA server software when this got too large, the C6300 hits the reboot trigger and the gateway resets. Back a few months ago versions of my favourite media player managed to chew up several giggles of memory on my 16 giggles system before crapping out, took a while as well.

    Ain't software just wonderful.

I like software, software I have control of. It ain't like rocket science no slide rules (got a 30+ scale and 47 year old Pickett somewhere) or calculus needed a simple old backwoods critter can read and follow it, it is just a list of marching orders like :heidi: issues and you best follow.

What trouble has software caused you?

true- I am more interested in R/C Helis and Planes-most of the little places are drying up and the ones left are more geared toward the cars/trucks like J was talking about.

There was a Hobby Town in Manchester that had everything, but I think that even they have moved to Londonderry. There was a small shop in Kittery that just closed up-but I think they moved to York.

This Hobby Lobby thing just hit me the wrong way last night after seeing the sign for the last 6 month.

There is plenty online. But I rather brick and mortar for this stuff.

Plus I have been stiffed at some of the online sites in the past where things are "in stock" but never ship-especially the "discount" sites. My cc isnt charged but its a royal PITA

Finished up the under the stairs shelf area , used up some pine boards that I've had left over from other projects and reused some shelves from an old book case .

And I went to a lot of them..
Had some big regional races there with guys from Canada, New York, Connecticut..

There ya go, it is always good to add more storage, even better is getting rid of that which is being stored. Four items (chairs) left my large walk in closet in the den. I still have a pile of things to sort through.

After we first moved in here, I re-aranged 5 closets and the pantry. Also added shelving in the garage along with a small workbench. All kinds of things are now out-ta sight. What can I say, over the decades one collects a bit of stuff. But when the boss quilts it really adds up. Her stuff overflows into all corners of the house. I however got one of her machines back up into her quilting room and out of my den. Still have tons of her stuff down here. Maybe someday.

    Smokey,

You might be better off with a stand-alone Linux box and a dlnaserver running on it. Look for 'minidlna' in google. If I recall I had to compile it. I have it running on centos.

I gave up on using any vendor specific devices for functions like this. Consumer focused software is always horrifying, especially when a router is trying to offer that function. Never seems to work right.

The server in the router is in fact miniDLNA.

The one you are running was in fact written by a Netgear employee.

I also have miniDLNA, Kodi, and MediaTomb on my system. Kodi is pushing out all kinds of updates for their upcoming release.

I have a rather large collection of toys to play with on this box.

In general I find version control and QA to be somewhere between slim and non existent.

This is before they put the communication majors in as first, second, and sometimes third level technical support.

Maybe I'll get one of those Linux set top units to play with, they are cheap. But I'm going to get a Silicon Dust unit to place TV on my network via DNLA. Hell, even the long out of date Vista moron does DNLA serving.
