Haha yeah we got a little side tracked with the fans didn't we? No video yet. The saw videos are on hold until I finish boiling maple sap into syrup. At 80 bucks a gallon I'd say it's worth my time.:smoke:

I did fire it up today. Poured a lil fuel in the carb and a couple pulls and it fired right up. On a side note: I got a no spill Jill gas can recently, and will never go back! 11800 on the dti 20k tac says this saws actually tuned pretty well from the factory.

Put it in some 16" hickory and shoot I had forgotten what a slug my old cs 500 was befor I modded the muffler.

It actually has me contemplating these this evening:

You won't buy that wheel! You won't open up that cylinder! You won't advance that timing! You won't mod that muffler! You won't do it!:p

I think Mwebba said the same thing about this saw not liking the timing advanced. Guess you confirmed it.

Well I got a chance to drop a 14" wild cherry. Thought it would be an appropriate test for the 490. So here it is in all its stock glory!

So now that we know this is a well built but slow machine it's time to see if that can be improved. I'm going to take this in stages and post up a video of the gains on the same 14" green wild cherry log. First up the simple muffler mod:
    20160312_181913.jpg
At least it should have been simple. The screws on the deflector were torqued right down and the head on this one stripped pretty easy. So I had to drill this one out and used some self tapping screws to reattach the deflector. Underneath the deflector is this little tube which restricts the exhaust quite a bit.
Its only held by the deflector screws and will easily pull out of the muffler.
20160312_182321.jpg once the tube is removed I modify the deflector by grinding the little tab off the front of it. From this: 20160312_190442.jpg

    To this: 20160312_215612.jpg

Next I gave it some gills on the other side of the muffler to help it breath a little better.

I use a small flat head screwdriver and a pair of needlenose pliers to shape the gills of the second muffler exhaust port.
    20160312_190252.jpg
Notice I made sure to locate the second port so it wouldn't be blowing directly on the plastic or the side of the saw case. Plenty of clearance.
    20160312_192431.jpg
After reinstalling the modified muffler the next thing to do is pull the limit caps off the carb and retune it. 20160312_193935.jpg

The limit caps are red and are located over the low and high needles on the carb. They can be reached easily with a drywall screw through the adjustment holes in the plastic cover. I screwed the drywall screw in and pulled them out. Incidentally they seemed to be held in by a small metal shield which came off too. You can see it laying to the left of the red caps in the picture. This had the side effect of making the high and low screws easier to get at with a splined adjuster. The needles can also both be adjusted with a little flat head screwdriver too.

So there you have it. Pretty basic muffler mod. The saw is tuned and hopefully I can get a quick video in the morning if it isn't raining too hard.

Tell me about it. We have a satellite Internet service and it sucks. Sometimes a 2 min video takes 2-3 hours

About an hour for that short video. Let's just say there won't be any 5 minute pizz reving videos anytime soon.

But I really like sharing them and seeing others videos. I would rather watch chainsaws on you tube than TV.

    YES I KNOW I HAVE A PROBLEM!
