I could install a winch on the ceiling.

I would recommend 1/8" material minimum. You can cut that with a jigsaw. Just use a metal cutting blade.

Been running the nc30 pretty hard to heat the shop during this pnw cold snap, 23 OAT right now. The deck and big blower make this stove work more like a furnace with a blast of actual hot air. Kinda makes me want a real wood furnace to get the automatic controls and bigger firebox/blower. Forced air gets you way more heat from a wood fire. Lots of hot air makes quick work of heating big spaces.

    Good info HB.
Lowest temp we've seen so far was 18, but the "deck" really makes a difference.
Once I get a real one made....I'll be good to go.

Stripping paint is certainly not very high on my list of fun things to do! I was limited to working in my basement so I used the citrus based, no fumes, eco friendly, non cancer causing stuff, it did little more than make the paint slightly soft, I bet the tetra-ethyl-methyl-death cancer causing stuff works a lot better, some quality time with the angle grinder and a wire wheel got it done though. It's a good thing the stove is in the basement or I might have to paint the stove now!

Put a new gasket in the door yesterday, the silicone is still setting, will fire it off later today. It's warm out so I can ventilate the basement of the new paint curing fumes. Posted this elsewhere too, but the high density gasket from Englander is waaay better than the crap my stove shop sells, here's a pic of them side by side.

I found that out by doing a gasket change last year.
Should have stuck with the stock stuff, 'cause that's what I ended up with after a short while.
It's still on there, and I expect it will be for a while longer.

That's good to know about the gasket material....my stoves only a couple months old, but I will keep that in mind when the time comes.
I had a heavy metal cabinet with several shelves laying around.....threw it out in the spring.
However I do have a Bilco door I saved from a job, was going to use it for a rock sled....but I didn't really need the sled, moving the small boulders with my massey GC went pretty easy.
I have been thinking about using the Bilco door for a convection deck.

I love mine. . I don't know why Englander ever thought of this..

I have the 30 blower on mine. The AC-16 (hair dryer looking one) works, but the AC 30 puts out probably double the amount and doesn't make the noise the 16 does. I'd highly recommend going to the 30 or a blower you can adapt to fit that is bigger!

I can see I'll have to make one of those decks.

My question is, can you still cook, say, chili or stew on top of the convection deck??

It can be removed in just 2 seconds. It's not permanently attached. It just sets on the stovetop
