Are there any aftermarket 550xp air filters available? I just kinda think the factory one that came on my saw looks look its not gona do well. Seems pretty thin, i like the filter setup on my 372 alot better.

check with your dealer, they usually have flocked material filters too.

I don't disagree with you and I have a 550XP......... I have seen this highly debated but have never really come to the conclusion that it is an issue yet. I guess when I figure it out it will be to late

Did quite a bit of cutting with a 550xp I had. Never had a problem with the air filter. In fact..after a full day of cutting..there would only be a chip or two in the whole air filter area !
Keep your chains sharp. Make chips..not dust ;)

Honestly I tear my saw down and clean it up after almost every cutting session and in all of those times with both a 555 and a 550XP I have yet to see any evidence that I have stuff getting through the filters. If I cut a lot in dry dusty conditions or I wasn't on top of keeping a chain sharp (lots of other problems caused by that) I would be a lot more concerned about it than I am.

X2 ! I was the same way with the 545 and 550xp. They got cleaned after everyday . Which meant not alot to clean out of the airbox :)

I wouldn't worry about it much ! Just keep the filter and surrounding area clean ...sharp chain....go have some fun !
But if the other filter makes you sleep better..than go for it

I've run the yellow mesh filter in my 346 for years I haven't seen any fines get past the filter into the intake. They seem to work good enough.

I've ran them both & couldn't tell the difference. The flocked is harder to clean. They say to run the nylon if you're having trouble with icing.

As others have said my 550 is always pretty clean around the filter area. I'm guessing I remember to clean it every 4-5 tanks.

My 550 actually came with the flocked filter, but due to seeing fines in the intake boot, I switched to the nylon. Not enough cutting time yet to see if there is a difference.

The flocked should filter better than the mesh. Did you try the oring mod or try some grease on the intake?

I know. That's why it was concerning to see the fines. I have not modified anything yet. I have been playing this same game with my 2166, which came with flocked and also had some fines getting by. Wish the weather would get better so I can continue my "research". :D

I haven't noticed any issues with my yellow Mesh filter.
