I bought a couple packs of those eco-bricks. Nothing more than pressed hardwood sawdust-no glue. If all else fails, you should be able to pick a few of those up, they may even be on clearance sales this time of year.

I think it is better now. This is with the door close and damper fully open; chimney is much warmer than when the first fire was built.

One more thing that will improve draft. Use this stuff to seal the pipe joints. The pipe that fits into the stove top thimble is probably most important, make sure it has a good tight seal.

Next time, stack the splits. The upper splits feed off the flames of the lower ones.

I wasn't that impressed with them. I'll give them another shot, now.

My dad has always said to burn 3, 5, 7 (prime #'s) or more and not even numbered counts.... Anyone ever heard this? Something about air movement thru the splits. Of course, that is in reference to heating with a pre-pea stove.

Never heard of that. But they do stack better when using a partial load. Kinda like this :stacke:

It smoked like mad on the first firing; had to unplug the smoke alarm.

I don't know about that but I have found I need at least 3 splits to burn good

In case you haven't read it yet, every time you hit a new max high temp it will give off a little paint/smoke smell.

I normally burn 3 split loads at home when I'm here. More heat and faster burns. (Tunnel of love when the doghouse air blows through the center)

Here is a short vid I just took. When this load burns down, I'll spread the coals to the outside edges and add 3 more until I go to bed and load it full..

And 9' really isn't enough. You should look into adding another 3' section of class A outside.

I originally had 15' outside and it worked. But going to 18' really helped a lot with start ups and also being able to close the air down.. a lot!

That video showed my air closed completely at the beginning and the end. Draft is your friend!!

Good luck Kim!! We are all rooting for you!!
