Generally, you can double the outside temp of single wall pipe to get an estimate what the exhaust gas temps are. I have no idea how to figure out how to do that from the outside of double wall.
X2 double wall pipe you need a (Condar ls a brand name) probe thermometer, so you can monitor your pipe temperature and keep the pipe hot enough to prevent accumulating creosote, a condar stovetop thermometer to monitor your stove top temperatures so you know where you're at and you know you are not over firing it. What you worry about is getting your Pipe hot enough, but not too hot, and getting the heat out of your stove that you want and burning clean without over firing, best way to find out if you're burning clean is to go outside and see if you're creating smoke. After all that you can worry about burn times
That sounds like the smart thing to do, do you know a good bang for your buck thermometer that you would recommend ?
Like HDRock said above Condar. Spend the $ once, it's good stuff. Buy two, one for the pipe, one for the stove. I can send links tomorrow when I'm at the PC.
Keweenaw , it just occurred to me that I got a probe thermo for my pipe, but for reasons I won't go into, I can't install. If you'd like it, pm your addy, and I'll stick in the mail. It's a Condar Fluegard.
I've got a roll of 2600F Ceramic Fiber Blanket if you need a piece.... 1/2" thick, 6# as it's called. It's 24" wide, so a length measurement is all you'd need.
As far as the key damper is concerned if it is in there it will only reduce your draft slightly, as long as it is full open
As long as the pipe comes apart easily I'd leave it out for now. Can always put it in if you need it.
There you go man, the brothers are going to hook you up, now all you need now is a stovetop thermometer Kudos, guys
And the thermo on the pipe now will be ok enough for the stove top until a new one can be ordered. I love this place, way to be Eric VW and papadave for stepping up.
yeah it will give you a general idea even if it is off one, two or three hundred degrees, but won't really tell you anything stuck on a double wall pipe
Once he gets this Condar, just take the one on the pipe and put it on the stove. The mags are pretty slow to respond to temp changes, but will do fine. Get an IR.
