Did I forget to mention that if you leave the cat plate out the saw will be loud. Silly me. I will mention the material they make those cats out of is usually no bueno for you. Like cus_deluxe said if you can get a clear shot at the flywheel the tach you have will work. I've heard great things about the fast tach. I like my dti 20k
A tac is nice for setting the idle and checking rpm in the cut but High tuning should be dome by ear! Loose the tac. When your MM is all done richer both the H and L a 1/4 turn and let warm up. Then use your idle adjust and just bump the saw up a few 100 rpm. Lean the saw out on L then start to richen till you here the saw hit it's highest reving point. Then give it 1/4 more. Turn the idle back down and check your throttle response. If snappy leave it there. If boggy lean it out it will be within that 1/4 turn till you get good throttle reponse. Then go stick it in the wood and set the high so when the saw is cutting with no pressure applied it's fourstrocking. And as soon as you apply pressure it cleans up and saws nicley. If i missed something guys please jump in here. The tac makes it nice to set the low but as you can see its still finished up by ear.
X2^^^ I used mine a lot until I got comfortable tuning by ear. I rarely use it now. I'd be willing to let you borrow my tach if you wanted.
One thing I might add pertaining to the adjustment of the H setting. In many videos (even the link I provided earlier on) they always have a guy adjusting the saw too rich, and then too lean. Fine on the low side. Silly on the high side (my opinion). It's just my opinion, but if you've turned it too rich on the H side(counter clockwise) and she's blubbering/rpm drop/power loss, then you turn it back in and it smooths out, you need not go much further. The point of the best tune is to keep it on the fine line of 4 stroke and clean up in the cut. Unless you want to hear your saw buzz at 20,000 rpm or whatever. That's the only point of turning it way lean on the H side.
Sooo, i really appreciate your offer Barcroftb but i think im going to just buy one. I have enough OPE that once i learn how to do this ill be using it quite a bit. That being said ive read about the Fast-Tach and dont like what i hear. Im leaning toward the DTI-20k but i also reached out to my local OPE dealer R. S. Hollinger & Son. They're good to deal with and its my go to OPE store. They quoted me $95 for an Oppama PET-1000. Has anyone used this tool. It seems alot the same as the DTI-20K
No worries. Always willing to help out a FHC brother. I don't have any experience with the oppama seems pretty similar to the dti20k. If you order it through your OPE guy you have somewhere to return it easy if your not happy with it.
millermodsaws has the right of it. If you want it to be not so loud find a way to cut just the cat out. If you don't care much about loud lose the whole plate. Those are pretty much the two main options.
I bought a non cat muffler for mine and did a muffler modd for it. The screws I though on mine were either the spkined husky or single D style? Yours look just round and not like either? Maybe its the pic?
I didnt look at your links but a lot of the guys said those cheap tachs dont have a fast enough refresh rate and you have to hold it wide open too long or longer than you want.
I bever found one on ebay, that I remember? I bought one from Ereplacement parts. I swear they ordered it from china. It took like 3 weeks to get here. Now it said it would take weeks when I ordered it just found it strange. Worked great. The 45cc one I got off ebay. It already was a DP and sounded good. I may of drilled the baffle or just left it as is... I can't remember?
MM is done, mighta gone a bit overboard. Cat is out, baffle plate still in, and i HAD to make it look fast..... and yes, a mig welder is on the list. Hard to do good work with a flux core..... Ill paint it tonight, run it tomorrow. Tach should be here tomorrow and tuning screw drives on monday.
I think a bird got into your shop and pooed all over your muffler! Must be the same bird I have in my shop! Seriously though that looks pretty cool!
Thats awesome!!! Your good if you can flux core something that thin!! I have never tried worried I would burn all kinds of holes in it!! Maybe I should take one of my junk mufflers and see if I can weld on it? Big stuff is no problem for me .
