Ya sometimes that stuff happens. I knocked a seal in crooked on the crankshaft cause I was so excited to hear it run. Put it together anyway, ran it then got a new one. Didnt mess the second one up.

Sometimes, even when you do everything right, it still don't work. Brand new seal in the timing cover on my big-block chevy. Installed on the bench, straight as an arrow. Balancer went on with no prob and yes, I oiled the seal lips before shoving the balancer on the shaft. Guess what is the only thing that f**%ing leaks on that truck. It leaks good too. I'm gonna have to tear it back apart this spring.

That stinks. I remember shop teacher putting seal in timing cover then making us install damper before tightening cover bolts so seal would be centered. He kicked a kid right in the butt for not doing that way. I did the way he said,I didnt want to get kicked! ;)

Hmmmmmm........ That's pretty much what I figured happened. I'm going in again anyways. I either have to figure out how to quiet down the timing gears or give up on them and swap it back to a double-roller chain drive. It's the timing drive that got me in there in the first place. The truck is an '89, which would have the Mark IV big-block in it and the notorious nylon fish-fin gears. My dad's '89 K3500 7.4L was that way. When we pulled the cover at 120K miles, many of the little gear teeth had snapped off. We had saved the engine just in time. So even tho my truck only has 80K on it, I had the front clip off for some body work, and figured I would nip that timing drive in the bud while it was easy to access. Opened her up and was surprised to find the later style drive, still nylon gear teeth but big, beefy ones instead of the little shark fins. Huh. Then I went to install the oil pan with a new gasket but the gasket was totally wrong.... "What the..... " Did some more lookin' and scratchin' noticed it had aluminum pistons in it, not iron, one-piece rear main seal and cast aluminum valve covers ..... "Hey, wait a second ...... " Turns out my truck is one of the ones that had the engine replaced under warranty from GM for overheating issues. I have a Gen V engine (long-block) with Mark IV accessories on it. Not a big deal now that I know but I had a few parts to return after that....

Im not too familiar with the gen v engines. Im more of a Ford man because of work. I have replaced old school nylon timing sets with the double roller bicycle style chain and sprockets. Had good luck with those. I kinda figured you were into gear drive timing sets by your avatar. Never messed with those. :)

Even more to the story, lol. I messed with a 5.0 HO in my '87 Mustang in my younger days. Did the gear set in that car and loved it. But it was much quieter under the cast aluminum timing cover of the 5.0 than the piece of tin GM calls a timing cover. I can hear the double idler assembly knocking against the cover at idle, lots of gear crunch in addition to the whine, which the mustang only had a subtle whine to it which I loved. Smooths out when engine speed picks up off idle but it still drives me up a wall. So if I can't get it to quiet down, I'm losing it for the double roller set. But sure does make a dandy avatar no?

I never really thought about the difference in covers. Does the aftermarket make a cast aluminum cover for GM? I wonder if that would help.

550xp is about $579 new. You could likely get a brand new one one from Wicked Work Saws for $500.

Used, I would be in for $350.

See a husky 394 in great shape for $625. Seems good to me if I was in market for a monster!

It looks a little dirty from the pictures. I haven't went to look at it since I don't like 50cc saws any way. I figure why buy it just to resell.

They do. And I have one. GM did a cast cover for the Gen VI engines ('96 - '00) if I remember right.

Yeah, but not if I can't find a good timing indicator for it....... Seems the ones for steel covers won't fit. I might have to make one.

I'm not a fan of 50cc machines either. 60cc is where fun begins, 70cc and above that is where real saws live.

I bought one because of all the rage of 50cc autotunes. . I hope it's worth it :)

I think you'll find that the newest generation of 50cc saws has quite the power advantage over the likes of your old 026/MS260. ;)
