Copied from google a google search, but explains the differences well:

"Clam shell" engines have the case split parallel to the crankshaft's rotation. They are the same design as snowmobile engines but the top of the crankcase is the same part as the bottom of the cylinder. The cylinder is not as easy to "tweak" because it is not it's own part, it's the top half of the crankcase and is holding the bearings in place. "Pro or split case" engines have the crankcase split perpendicular to the crankshaft's rotation. Cylinders can be shaved down to gain compression because they are their own part separate from the crankcase.

clamshell -- much harder to work on.

'split case or pro' -- easy to pull the cylinder off of the case

I checked the 4518 again, I had it tuned to 11,500. Turned in the H a bit to 11,900 and it sounded better to me. Though on the video it sounds like it's still a tad rich in the cut? (the limiter wouldnt let let me turn it up anymore)

Doesnt cut much faster though, but it doesn't bog quite as easily... Only one problem 3/4 of the way through the log I smelled something burning. Stopped and saw that bark was smoking pretty good -- on a frozen piece of snow covered maple I dragged out of the snowbank this morning; Doh  I've never had any saw burn a log quite that much.

I'm done playing with it as is -- gotta save the rest of the log for comparison after a few mods.

Here it is with a 16" .325 stihl RS chain, new out of the box (same type of chain as the 026 and an old husky small mount bar) 8 pin rim -- probably be better with a 7 but that's all I had handy.

Knocked the time down to 35 seconds - from 54

Next up is a muffler mod.

OK we're geting closer to comparing apples to apples.. That was respectable and more accurate comparison.. Looks like the EQ has potential..

    Thanks!

It's kinda like you know there is a saw in there just waiting to be let out......... You just gotta figure out how!

This is a recommended chain from another place on the net.

    Oregon 91VXL62

This should help a lot, along with a Muff mod, and a good tune (11,000 seems pretty conservative.) These come very fat from the factory.

As for the 023/230 comparison. This Quake is built like a pro saw (split case as Mike from Maine described above). Much easier to work on and they seem to respond well to mods.

Not a lot to the cylinder. The ports/transfers are of the simplest design. More pics later. :)

If one of you saw guru's lived nearby I'd get together so you can let the saw out! Think this saw will be a bargain once you get it figured out.. Are all new saws equipped with cats these days or just Californian emission saws?

Actually, most are not. They have gone stratocharged to avoid power-robbing cats. We are rapidly transitioning to electronic fuel metering as well. That helps keep a saw emissions compiant while keeping excellent power and throttle response.

Say the word and I'm sure any one of us would buy a saw for you and ship it once modified. ;)

What if it takes a little more than a Muffler Mod? ;)

I'll do what it takes -but once you get past a muffler mod most don't want to go that far.. They'd be better off buying an 026 for 150-200.

Isn't an 026 a 50cc? I wouldn't think a quake unported could ever run with a 26. Its still quality German saw next to a Chinese copy!
