For the money, best grinder out there. Comes with all necessary wheels, dressing stone, and a guide to help the wheel dressed properly and help keep everything in spec.

These are also the same as the Northern Tool grinders and they can be had for $99 on sale. Hard to beat for a grinder that's 100 X's better than the HF model and only cost about twice as much.

 

To be fair my HF one was $29 so it's more but well worth the money so far. I am considering setting up a bench in my shed with a peg board and a small wood stove to get it going in comfort. I tend to go overboard with this stuff some times Its a fun hobby that just turned into crack.....

Well I did a couple more chains today and must say it is a good sharpener however I really need a 5/16 wheel for the rakers / depth gauges. Doing it by hand is well not motorized therefore boring.

 

You can "make" your 1/4" wheel into a nice Raker machine. Dress it well. MasterMech has a nice pic of his dressed. I don't know if his is 1/4" but mine is.

There are cheap replacements online. I picked up two extra 1/4 and one 3/16 for $10. Let's you experiment.

 

Mine is the Stihl wheel that comes with my grinder, you could duplicate it by dressing to the same angle. The curve in mine comes naturally from hitting the rakers in the same spot on the wheel every time, only takes a couple loops to start getting that shape.

Well sadly I am having a heck of a time getting the rakers to file right. I profiled the wheel like MMs and did them it cut terribly so I sharpened a bunch of chains and did the rakers with my wheel on my buddies Oregon 511a and they cut perfectly??? I think the wheel is more centered over the chain on the Oregon than on the timber tuff. I then tried doing every other guide on the timber tuff then turning the chain and stone around and doing the other guides. The results where perfect it cut like a hot knife through butter. The question is what did I do wrong? I shouldn't need to reverse the chain should I?

 

The way the rakers are angled will change how the grinding wheel hits them. They run off center, so you must set up for each side. I always do all my chain cutter on one side, then the other, then one side of rakers, then the other. It is a must that you adjust the machine to the chain. What's good for the left, won't be good for the right side, just because of them being off to the side.

And to be honest, I hand file the rakers now. I have taken to much off, to many times. It doesn't take me to long to hand file them. I have a small bar I cut down, and lay it in there. One day, IwiI will buy a chain vise from Homelite410 on AS.

I am only doing my chains, and a select few family and friends though. If I was trying to make money at it? I would have a grinder set up for all 3 . Left cutter, Right cutter, and Raker. Just to eliminate downtime and keep production to the max. But that's a perfect world and in a perfect world they would be Silvey's or the like

 

Thanks Dex I thought the vids where doing it right I guess not. To be honest I'm faster at hand filing them anyway. I know one thing the hand filed raker chains are fricken sharp, fast and straight with the timber tuff sharpened chains. I may keep at it that way for a while. I'm not to buried in chains and won't let myself get to buried either. To be honest that thing is a BLAST I shoulda bought one years ago. One thing I've never been good at was hand filing.....

 

You could make a mini plumb bob and see where the spindle is located in relation to the vise/chain no?

 

Good idea MM. I haven't gotten back to check yet however I don't mind doing rakers by hand and I'll probably keep doing it that way. It's the teeth I usually suck at this grinder has turned my suck into professional suck which is about 5000 notches up from where I was at.
