Re-spooled my Warn 2K with 3/16- 7/19 galvy cable last weekend. I can't find anyone with a swager for the ferrule to save my life. So... would you trust cable clamps to hold the line? Thanks, JB
I wouldn't, I've seen to many cable braces slip to trust cable clamps. I've also seen atv winch cables snap, scary stuff!

Wish I lived closer BK. Have both the tool and a few 3/16" swags. Cable clamps will work as long as you've got a couple of em and they're installed the right way.
+1 never saddle a dead horse ! Put the saddle on the live side of the cable & the U on the dead end side.
Gonna make some chokers and extension cables also. I've got about 500 ft. to play with. It's rated for #4300, so 2K load should be OK. If clamps will work, I'm a happy camper. My first ATV winch, gotta ask so I don't mess up. Thanks guy's. JB
Make a Flemish eye then wrap the tag and main line with electrical tape, then apply your cable clip. Personally, I taper the tag, wrap with electrical tape, then wrap with mechanics wire. I have NEVER had a splice blow with this method. Field eye spliced two 3/4" cables at the mine last week that the cat skinners proceeded to blow up trying to yank a 789 out with two D9s. I make my chokers this way also.
I used 2 aluminium cable crimp sleeves and pounded them tight with a hammer on a concrete floor. Held up to heavy abuse for several years now.
One of my guys at work knows how to do a Flemish eye. Old school mine-worker, said the tag is the critical part. I'll give it a try. Thanks, JB
This thread reminds me that my parents mucked up the winch cable on the sportsman 500. I should just buy that synthetic rope for it and be prepared to change it out when I get up north next time. Probably over the 4th of July.
Ok, finally made the time tonight to do the winch line. 7 x 19 - 3/16 wire rope Did the Flemish eye, then slid the clamps to tighten the thimble. 3 clamps @ 18/16 spacing, tag is 1/2" behind the last clamp. Am I good? Getting ready to re-spool under load to cinch everything up.
Cool. For the chokers, can I get away with 1 or 2 clamps if I eliminate the thimble? I'd be surprised if I had more than 750-1000lbs. to drag, max.
IMO... I'd like 3 on the chokers just because they can get some abuse as they grab logs and then roll over while dragging. It's always hard on the cable without thimbles but can't really use a short cable as a choker with thimbles... usually can't get an end thru the thimble. Could use nylon slings as chokers. I use 1" slings a lot.
Nylon slings are a good call, will start sourcing them. Or I'll spring for some 3/8 chokers, only need 2 at this point. Thanks, JB
I would pass on the clips and thimble. Tape and wire wrap would be your best bet. I ran on last winter on the same choker.
