C & S this cherry today. It got knocked over on the back of out property sometime in the last month or two. I hate to loose a cherry from my woods, but Mother nature provided me some sweet smelling BTU's. Hope I can get it dry enough to burn this Fall. The MS261cm and MS461 made quick work of bucking it. Then, I split it smallish.
That's a very light colored cherry. The black cherry we have here is very orangy reddish. Looking at the bark, its definitely cherry though. Nice score!
Yep, this was a healthy tree, but the heartwood was really anemic. Not normal for around hear either.
That's cherry? Looks like black birch from here. Never seen cherry bark peel off and curl like that, even on the smaller pieces.
The peeling bark had me thinking birch at first, too. Definitely cherry though. We have lots of black birch here, and it definitely didn't look or smell like black birch.
That does not look anything like the cherry I've been cutting and ID'd on here the last few weeks ??? Wood ID1 http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/wood-id-1.9909/ Wood ID2 http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/wood-id-2-2015.9942/#post-252134 ?
What's the saw on the right? And did you buy those red/orange aftermarket dogs on it on Ebay? I've been eyeballing a set of those on ebay for my 362.
Yeah, when cherry is young, it's smooth like that. You can see it in the pics you have from your earlier posts. It gets all burnt potato chippy as it gets older.
Thanks.... just ordered a set. Thanks... that's amazing how different the bark looks on the young stuff. The stuff I was cutting was really rough, thick tough bark like pine bark. But now that you mention it, I do remember some of that lighter stuff on the younger small stuff...
Cherry seasons very quickly from what I hear, provided it doesn't get drenched on a regular basis. IE is top covered at least.
A cherry got knocked over this winter between my yard and my neighbors, this one's a big one though with the dark wood, I'm not crazy about cherry but I'll cut it up and burn it.
I spied a large(18") wild or black cherry today... Down since at least the Derecho of '12 in this area. It's off the ground, so I hope it's gooder...
We cut a standing 18" cherry in November for my buddy. He top covered it after splitting and stacking, it was at 15% today. This stack wasn't in the sun, and it's pretty protected from the wind, so, even in not ideal drying location it dries quickly. These were big splits too.
