Just make sure yall trim your wedges when they need it. Don't need no flying shrapnel.

The PPE was in the "....." at the bottom. Can't you read brail? ;)

WOW!! This may be a first! I brought something up on this site about firewood, that you guys didn't already know??? How is that possible?

That's a great idea, I should try that one day. But then again, I haven't swung an axe in a couple of years. Since getting log splitters, why would you? I guess for "fun", but it's just too hard on my shoulder which is not in great shape these days.

"trim" your wedges? I guess you mean file off any hanging edges as they get worn/ bent....?

Those twisting wedges are fantastic! Someone gave me one to try a few years ago. I used it once and immediately went on the hunt to find my own. It's just a cheap one, I think I found it at TSC.

I have a grenade laying around the shop somewhere. It's best right where it's at. It's useless.

Yeah I'm hammer swingin mofo :axe:;)
I wish I could work that hard nowadays:BrianK:, I use the little one to start the wedges and it is small enough to beat the wedge down through past the top surface if necessary

The Helko & Mueller are pretty much identical in shape, just different weights. With their thin edge/long taper I rate them the best equally. The Wetterlings is 2nd cause its edge is thicker,I did a few minutes modification with the 4.5" angle grinder to reduce it some.Works much better now.

I picked up a twist wedge at the local hardware store. A neighbor also gave one to me before he moved. The one I got at the store was in a kit with a splitting maul, gloves, glasses, tool bag and log carrier. Nothing high quality but it all works as intended for like 60 bucks.

Welcome Donnie. I too, am new, and like you, I am finding this a great site.

Regarding that bar oil question from clemsonfor, I was in a husky dealership and he had husky oil and a no name sae30. I asked which he'd go with and he said "the cheap stuff". Bar oil is one thing that I just don't debate over. Wherever I'm at, whatever they got.
