Will the 404 put more of a load on the saw and cause alil more engine temp than 3/8? Any harder on the bearings and crank?

It can load the saw more depending on how aggressive the chain is filed.

What about wear on the saw?

Changing the chain will not change how much power the saw puts out. At worst I think you might drag the RPMs low enough to make stalling the chain easy and perhaps see a bit more clutch wear but I can't see it doing anything terrible to a saw 70cc and up.

You really need a saw with big brass ones to see a performance gain over 3/8" however.

The gain is time between sharpening and longer tooth to last longer.

I love the es light but I would rather have a Cannon . Back to the 404 just a scenario. If u took the same saw with 28" bar one with 404 and one 3/8 and buried the bar for say 15min. Of cutting. Which setup do yall think would run the most engine temp. Or would they be the same?

I would think it would be heat soaked completely by then.

X2... After that long? The saw has reached its max temp.

Chad did a test with the 660's and tested temp. If I recall, after about 5 minutes, the saw never got any hotter. It reached an equilibrium. It can only generate so much heat and produce so much cooling air.

I've always wondered what the normal engine operating temperature of a chainsaw engine is. Since they don't have thermostats I wonder what the max temps are??
What was the max engine temp?

Are there standard kerf widths for various chain pitches? Does .404 necessarily make a wider cut?

It does make a wider cut.
