460 Question Regarding Rim Sprocket

    I just realized while taking the 460 apart last night that I am running an 8 pin rim on this saw with a 28" bar. I don't know how I forgot about this but I did. Would you all recommend going to a 7 pin rim with the 28" bar and if so will I notice the difference. So far I have been pretty happy with with how it handled the 28" with the 8 pin but now I want to play with the 7 pin. Also where is the best place to order them from and do the different brands make a difference?

    You'll have more torque with a 7. Dealer is where I get mine unless I add a dozen to an order from madsens.

    Stihl or husky dealer. I like the stihl rims. If your saw is ported if May very well run better with a 28" as ling as the rakers aren't low. A 7t will give you more torque as mike said.

    On my ported 372's I run an 8t on both, one with a 20" one with a 25". If I have to use a 28" I put the 7 tooth on as it feels stronger. I've never timed cuts between 7 and 8t above 20" hardwood. It's been a few years, but in 20" oak my 372 was 2 full seconds quicker with the 8t. Some might disagree, some might agree. If the saw has the power to pull a larger rim, it will be quicker with the larger rim.

    My 7900 was muffler modded only and I ran a 7t with a 28". 8t when I had a 24" on it. My 066 runs an 8t for a 36 and 28" unless I'm on the mill, then I'll put the 7 on when I swap milling chains.

    Most of the fellers out west use 8t on 32" bars on 044's..

    Rims are cheap. Pick up one at a stihl dealer and give it a shot. If you like prying or leaning on a saw, you might like the 7T better. If you let the saw do the cutting you might like the 8t better

    Brand doesn't make a difference. I would run the 7T for the 28" on that one. That saw was fun with the 8 pin and a 20" tho. :thumbs:

    I can't believe you've been running the 8 on that saw with the 28" all this time.:eek: Dropping to the 7 shouldn't slow you down in the cut at all and I think you will like all the power you find. :saw:

    Crazy thing is it seems to still pull the 28" great with the 8.......... Can't wait until it was some extra bananas:banana:

    This weekend I was accidently was pulling a 32" bar with a 8 pin on my 460. I was pleasantly surprised how well it did though. You'll start to love banana's after you get your first extra Banana....:dex:

    Switching out doesn't take that long, you should try both and a few different bars to see what runs best. I know with smaller bars there was a decent difference in the 7 and 8 on one of Dexs saws at his g2g.

    After we finish basketball practice I am stopping by the dealer to see about a 7 pin. Also can anyone point me towards a 3/4 wrap for my 460 that they would recommend or f anyone has one laying around they want to sell I would be interested.

    Weber customs are nice. http://www.webercustoms.com/2.html They have some on ebay uncoated if you want to have them coated a custom color.

    If you want a new OEM 3/4 wrap just let me know. That saw was in excellent cosmetic shape. It deserves something real nice, Aftermarket or OEM. I like Dex's Madsen's wrap.

    Well they didn't have the 7 pin rim so I ordered it. I did pick this up though. Hopefully it's a nice upgrade from the current RS chain.

    RM will cut slower than RS but hold up better in Dirty wood. I have a couple loops of it around myself.

    I've been searching high and low for another Madsens wrap. Just to have on the shelf.

    There was a member elsewhere that had a couple. They were older and a little beat up, but could be restored.

    I look into it tonight for ya Cert..

    what kind of dealer doesn't have a 7 pin on the shelf????

    i really wish I wouldn't have sold my 044 and 066 3/4 handles now that I almost have the 044 hybrid back together and the 064... thought I was done with saws until I found this place.... haha

    The 461 wrap is a little bigger on the elbow part. That or the aweber customs wrap are my favorite ones.
