Attacking the pile!

We made a big dent in the wood pile today. It was pretty warm today, but it cooled off nicely as the rain passed nearby. We didn’t spend a lot of time on it, but we put a nice dent in the pile. If it isn’t raining tomorrow, we’ll put the wood in totes. We have filled 17 totes so far. I have to clear a space to put them because they are quickly filling the driveway and yard.

It feels good to have a portable storage system for wood. These totes might not be the most durable, but they get the job done. I’m curious to see how long they last.

I think we might have split close to a quarter of the pile so far. Maybe. I’d have to get a good look and figure it out. We have split 8 cord in addition to what we split today. So probably 11-ish cord total.

 

Looking good! Is the tote the dmall wood pile on the right side? How do you move it?

 

I also built ~1/3 cord racks to bring firewood into the attached garage during heating season, about 4 cords worth...but my storage is still standard stacks...the racks would take up too much of our couple acres to store the whole 20+ cord inventory that way.
Plus I've already had to do some rot repair on the bottom of most of my 7-8? year old treated lumber racks, I can't imagine trying to keep up with a ton more of them!

 

Yep. I use my bobcat to move them.

These hold just under a 1/2 cord and weigh about a ton. Maintenance isn’t too hard because I mill my own lumber.

We built a few more totes and then stacked some of it. It was really hot so we didn’t get much done. We should have at least 5 totes full when we get the pile all stacked.

The rain has been going right past us all week. We need it pretty bad. I’m going to work on my suppressor tonight and enjoy the cool basement.

 

Getting kinda unbearable hot here too. Cool basement is about the best place to be.

 

I agree. It is supposed to be around 90 here, so I may be spending a lot of time in the basement.

 

I still have about 3/4 to a cord of rounds to split but they may have to wait with the heat. Trying to get my mulching done also before I go in for a knee scope.

 

my mom just had her second knee replacement a few days ago.

 

We got the 4 totes in the picture above filled. There is enough left for 1 more tote. Have to build another batch of em. I have a pallet of materials pre-cut, so we just have to assemble the pieces. The wood is drying really fast, so I’m happy. We have filled 20 totes so far.

My brother has not cut any wood for this year yet, so I offered to haul the bobcat if he pulls his big equipment trailer and we can clean up some of the free wood on marketplace so he can get caught up. I’m waiting to see if he bites.

This is just the first pile. It goes back an easy 30 ft. We have done about 1/4 of it, MAYBE 1/3. There is a smaller pile plus a 70-ish ft row of logs. I also have 3 “semi loads” of doug fir poles. We filled the truck right to the brim for each trip, grossing nearly 100,000 lbs per trip. Mostly 30-50 footers, with a bunch of 70-80 footers on the side. Most of them are for the sawmill, but there are some that are destined for firewood, along with a large pile of mill scraps and cutoffs. I can get pics if you want. I could easily fill another 150 totes and still have a lot of wood left to process.

I could keep a good crew busy out here for at least a week or two. If you look just above the hydraulic filter, you will see a pallet of boards. That’s enough to make another 15-20 totes. I have to mill more boards, a LOT more boards.

I don’t know who to blame for this wood hoarding thing I got, but somebody is getting their a$$ whooped!…..yeah….me… I must have been a firewood tycoon in a previous life. The kind where you see piles of firewood that dwarf houses.
