FWIW…..I have an aluminum flat bottom Jonboat that stays on my pond now (had a nice old 9.9 Johnson outboard for it but it got pilfered….another story.) Quite a few years ago I spent some time on it and replaced a number of rivets that had worked loose, painted it and replaced the transom wood with some mahogany that I had from other projects. Used 2 coats of marine grade varnish and it’s held up perfectly. Sits outside 100% of the time. Miss that 9.9 as the combo was the perfect little boat for fishing small rivers and lakes around here. Oh, also used all stainless steel hardware.
I have another boat question... Is a 28lb thrust minkota trolling motor enough to get around this to retrieve rc boats or fish? I highly doubt I'll take it anywhere else. Its the 12ft aluminum boat it would go on. The lake is about 75% complete in this vid. https://photos.app.goo.gl/xmUsQNocA1cdodwq5
The minkota and mercury came in the boat deal. The Johnson 6 horse was given to me. My original plan was to get them both running in tip top shape and keep the one I prefer. Now I'm considering selling both after getting them tuned up.
28 is plenty for that boat, unless you get a lot of wind. I have a old 25lb and it's able to move my 12' pretty quick.
Im keeping the 7.5 hp mercury and selling the 6 hp Johnson. I cleaned the Mercs carb, just dark brown goo in it. No ethanol signs. Nothing was plugged. Fires up and runs great for short periods. One, I can't run it long because the water pump impeller is trashed and two, I don't think the diaphragm fuel pump is pumping. It runs beautifully then starves. Pump the bulb and it fires right back up. Imma head to the closet mercury dealer to get some parts.
The Johnson won't idle no matter where I adjust the low speed mix setting. The nephew was in it so I'll probably have to go behind him and fix his mistakes. That's kinda normal with him.
