Here's what worked for me and should work for you. it's cruel yet effective. buy you some glue traps and set them along where the birds roost. the traps need to have about a foot of fishing line attached to them so the bird can take flight and then hang there fluttering. leave them hang there dead and replace as needed to keep the fear in them. birds are smart enough to know their buddy is in deep trouble. if you can break the habit for a full winter you may have solved the issue.

House sparrows are invasive in the US.
So shooting them would help the ecosystem...

My wife would NOT let me do that! I gotta find a "more humane" way out of this... I do understand that plan though, and I get it! We have pond fish and when one dies, she's gotta have a "Burial"... :picard:

I understand completely, since killing is out then you need to go with exclusion. bird netting is cheap online to create a curtain over the open area? I use a 7' tall net on my blackberries to keep birds out

Seems like it should be Chrissy's job to clean the wood of all the bird droppings.
When I was back in grade school, my brother and I would go to the storage shed at night and shine sparrows on their nest and shoot them with a BB gun. Dad didn't object cause he knew the mess they made in the shed.

Yeah, sometimes you have to go to extremes. Not saying that animals think/reason like we do, but I do think this type method can work sometimes.

Can you put a 'ceiling' in the shed above the firewood, made from thin sheet material? The birds would live in the space between the roof and the ceiling, and poop would fall on the ceiling, keeping the logs clean.

I hate to suggest it but why not buy some of those cheap blue tarps and use them? Or even better, some cheap bed sheets from a 2nd hand store? Those king size sheets are huge!

Seems counter productive since the wood pile is already under cover but it sure would solve the problem of keeping the chit off the wood and having to remove it.

They are actually "nesting" between piles and in between the logs. The cribbed ends is where most are living. They are stubborn, I'll rip out a nest and a day later it's back! :headbang:

Actually, that has crossed our mind Dave, one issue is when it freezes and they get wet. It's a BIT@# to get it off the wood. We tried it on the piles not int the wood shed. I'll tell ya, Somebody will become Rich if they ever come up with a solution. I can deal with the Black Widows all day long and this time of year they are slow so I just blow them off another place in the yard, they are the "cricket slayers". But man, the $#!T is unbelievable...

    Music critics.

I don't know if an insect fogger would leave behind enough of a residue for a scent that might deter. I don't think any residue would negatively impact the exposed firewood.

Sounds like you need a couple black snakes in the shed.

My vote is bird netting, screen, or hardware cloth stapled all 4 sides, top and bottom.

Ask ReelFaster to come help, we know he can get to the back of the shed!
