Not a chance. Nothing beats Belray in a foam filter.

It’s been about 6 weeks of on again off again scouring the internet for an oil cap for this vintage late 70s 61 case. I found the Husqvarna part number and determined that the cap also fit a 162. Armed with that information I kept looking, to no avail. Nobody is making these caps anymore, OEM or aftermarket. Such is the case when you’re dealing with 40+ year old saws. I did find a place in the UK that had a few in stock but they didn’t ship outside of the UK. It was then that I decided to just make one and add an o-ring for the seal. After some measuring I figured out it was an M24 X 3 thread, and the cap had to be vented because the oil tank lacked a vent. For this I just drilled a 1/32” hole through the center. It might weep a tiny bit of bar oil when laying sideways but I can live with that. Maybe some gauze attached to the inside of the cap will help? We’ll see. At least now I can tune it in the wood and actually use it.

I need a couple of those caps myself
No hurry I'm buried in projects
I'm going to order some of these to try
    THE DUKE'S OIL CAP FITS HUSQVARNA 61 266 OLD STYLE 501 62 66-02
If they're even close and too big I'd be happy I'll just try to dremel them to fit.
I'm glad there's still some of us keeping the greatest Husqvarna series going
    Local shops won't touch them
    Or any vintage saws now
The old techs are gone these kids will do carb swaps or fuel lines that's about it
120-140.00 labor per hour rates are common now
People are just tossing old saws now.

I tried fitting an oil cap from a 1984 saw on this late 70s case. If you turn down the diameter of the cap to about 1.06” it’ll fit but the thread is still a couple MM too big. If you need a couple of the really old caps like I just made let know. Now that the design is done I can make more.

I picked up this 268 (non XP) parts saw for $75 off eBay last week. It’s obviously in rough shape and needs quite a bit of help. It’s got spark which is a huge plus. The clutch cover had some weird brazing repair work done to it so I’ll consider that garbage. Upon pulling off the cylinder, I see that it’s not an open port like what should’ve been on there. I measured the bore and it’s actually 52mm which means it probably came off a 272XP. Unfortunately this Mahle cylinder is missing half of the top cooling fin, but the bore itself looks good. What to do…

A bolt-on fin? I've seen that on here before, riveted into place...

No. Complete bolt on head. Like a dirt bike. Dyno joe on the youtube does it on some of his race saw builds.

Now there's a thought. The only thing getting in the way of me going that route is that I may want to flip this saw in a few months. Having a custom head on a factory cylinder would up the cool factor but I'm not sure that would translate into a sale.

Not really the bench, but rather shelves. All saws are unpacked in their new shop home, spoiled rotten with conditioned air and heat.

I’d run that w/ no second thoughts. When Eric Copsey ported a 346 for me, he told me a story of something falling off his bench and breaking off part of the two top fins. He said if anything ever happened he’d warranty fix it. Never had an issue.
