On a semi-chisel, give the 13/64 a try and see if that don't allow you to keep the guides at ~.025.
The trade off of course, is durability of the cutting edge, but semi chisel is pretty darn tough...

Admittedly, I use whatever file is handy and sharp... They both work for work chains...

A few years ago I tried the 13/64 file first, didnt like the result as much as when the 7/32 came out.
Then I set rakers to .030 and never looked back.

Before doing the rakers, I noticed neithor file would allow it to self feed nicely,
The 13/64 worked, but the 7/32 works better with or without rakers being touched IMHO.

When I run a new semi chain, I have found it best to just set rakers to .030 before putting it on the saw ........... Maybe running RM is different than Oregon ?

    RM has thicker chrome layer...
Not sure if that would make much difference on Semi chisel or not...
Anyone here run the Oregon VXL or DPX a lot?
In semi, all I use is RM..

Put more hook and 30 degree top plate angle. You won't need low rakers.

I have done more hook with the 13/64 file and had to sharpen RM too often ...............
If I wanted speed, I was runnin RS.

My 100' of RSL is in my grubby hands now, so I am just awaiting my double bevel files, then my RS will be loosing some weight and getting squared.

Now if I want speed in the cut I will run the RSL, or the RS square filed

I like the way RM stays sharp with rakers @ .030 and a 7/32 file..........its a self feeding frenzy for the whole tank - every tank !!!
When I have to grind RM on my reversable 511a they get put @ 30/60, so the files follow the lead from Stihl and my grinder reminds the cutters of their proper attitude when they get squirrely

I file lower with a 7/32" file. It still lasts good but will self feed and cut right with a new rs chain.

RS rakers come @ .030 on any that I measured so far ............ maybe slightly under .030 but definately more than .025

My RS cuts great, hand filed or ground on the 511a ............ shame I have to take one of my best RS chains and dull a few of these new double bevel files that were here when I got home from work last night

I've took a brand new chain and ground half the cutter off before I ever put it on a bar. I prefer to go from round to square for a play chain.

Not me ......... I will use that new chain untill it's better than 1/2 way filed away, then I will turn it to square. It took a while for me to get the one tooth I posted to square, and on an 84dl, there are 41 more to do

New for me with the roll of RSL is starting right away with square. I can see gullet work being necessary on the new stuff before use, but I cant afford to loose 1/2 of the tooth that I could be cutting with just for a play chain.

I've done at least 5 new ones to back to the rivet. It's easier to work with new ones a lot of times so you can make the cutters as long as you want and then clip the heels. Depending on what you do with the cutters you can still cut firewood with them. I just wouldn't take it and cut a muddy shagbark hickory.

Got a question, I started playing with the Chain Sharpener I won at the FHC GTG (Thanks Dex!! @DexterDay ) and after some trial and error I had it what I thought was setup good and going well. Anyhow got about 3/4 of the way around and found about 6 teeth in a row that were WAY shorter than the rest and I am talking like the grinder wheel didn't even come close to hitting them. Being a rookie at this I ended going back and slowly adjusting all the cutter to the same length and then sharpening the chain. Now I am wondering if that was the right thing to do? I will say for my first go around on that grinder it worked like a dream and after filing the rakers was pulling great!

Its the right thing to do ............ you wont need 2 different raker heights for different length cutters ........... faster sharpening the next time also as you set the grinder one time for each side of cutters

Question about hand files - Will any brand of 3/16" work for RS .325 chain or do you want a "premium" file when sharpening the harder stihl chain? Great info here. I have a long way to go when I hand file.
