Far out, brenndatomu was right guessing 7,000', we're +/- 7300 depending on where one looks. If it were me I'd try Canadian border VT suggestion before making your stack too high to go fishing in.
Double wall is hotter inside therefore improves the draft while staying cleaner. Lasts longer because inner wall is stainless steel.
I understand that, my draft is ridiculous; my chimney is ICC exterior so stainless double wall insulated and my insurance company made me build a chase (2x2 plywood with siding) to cover it. Still don’t understand how it effects my stove Woodstock IS (AS big brother) efficiency..
Remind me please, is your super tall stack pipe on the outside or up through a chimney? Would double or single wall matter if it's exterior pipe? Wondering about -20* and high winds if single or double would make a difference on draft...
Anything exterior would be "chimney pipe" and you want doublewall insulated for that....interior is stove pipe, and doublewall air cooled. Cold temps and high winds can certainly make draft go up, for the duration of those events, not all the time. Draft can be erratic with wind, unless its constant, and fairly straighline winds.
Mines outside I think it’s 26’, IIRC you can’t use single wall outside. I also have interior chimney 2x4 brick going up central part of house top of exterior cleanout exterior 4 foot high left of electrical panel Back roof brick chimney edit that’s 5 years ago before my projectss
Yes wildwest because of my wind situation, my insurance company required it.. maybe because of a small tornado 2 years before. I have had 85 mph winds since.. chimney was fine. I sided it so it looked better. With your winds there I would consider it
BKVP here. Been in Alaska last 10 days. How can I help? Also, anytime you wish you can email me at [email protected]
All, As it pertains to controlling draft, I want to inform all that in the 2015 New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) published by EPA, the following is written: 2.3.2 Tamper Warnings (a) The following statement must be included in the owner’s manual for all units: ‘‘This wood heater has a manufacturer-set minimum low burn rate that must not be altered. It is against federal regulations to alter this setting or otherwise operate this wood heater in a manner inconsistent with operating instructions in this manual.’’ If a damper or other device is added to the flue for purposes of controlling draft, it can also allow for the appliance "to be operated at a lower burn rate than as tested" This is illegal according to the NSPS. As a manufacturer we cannot comment on the use of dampers for this reason. I have shared this observation in other forums. Subsequently EPA staff have mentioned they saw the posts. I'll refrain from addressing manners in which draft can be controlled.
Hi thanks, the tag was for my question that got answered. Coincidently my dealer was out of town too, but, I got in touch with the installer that gave me the details. Hope you had a good vacation
Hi, thanks for the reply...the discussion was more so about what would BK consider an acceptable chimney at almost 8k ft, vs what would work here at 1k ft. The question that was posed by wildwest about their existing chimney setup was would it actually take a 29' chimney to over come a couple of 90* turns and a short horizontal run, as a chart she found suggested. I suspect not, but have never lived anywhere near that elevation either, so... Rant warning! As for the EPA's requirement to not use any kind of damper to control draft...if I have chimney draft that is regularly over the OEM spec, you can bet your last dollar I'm gonna use a tried and true method to control it, screw those blowhard bureaucrats! They have the emissions testing so screwed up that it seems nobody even knows where to start to straighten it out...and what they've done to Lamppa Mfg is downright shameful...and IMO illegal! I couldn't work for such an inept "organization". 99.9% of them would freeze to death if left out in the wilderness with nothing but a wood stove for heat...and probably starve to death without uber eats! But by George they're wood stove experts...riiiiight. We have to deal with our state EPA at my job...fortunately they are reasonable people, at least most of the time...but every once in a while one of the upper level mucky mucks gets their signals crossed and shorts wadded up. Rant over No comment needed or expected, I understand the spot you are in. Hope you enjoyed your time in Alaska...I hope to make it there one day! Sorry for the derail Eckie !
I did enjoy my trip. I visited several retailers and informed them on compliance issues. I snuck in a halibut trip then flew a redeye home. Off the PA!
