Inline sixes have been used as power units for all kinds of equipment over the years...we had one on an emergency backup water pump at the steel mill...it was set up to auto start when the power went out.
That was the small one...there also was a much larger pump powered by a V12 Cat too.

Sure did. I had a Chipmore drum chipper years ago that had a Ford I6 and a Rockford clutch for motivation. Good, reliable motor.

They definitely had industrial versions with forged steel cranks in dump trucks ect. Snow cats ran some I believe plus applications like you mentioned.

I made a quick valve speing compressor today, picked up the gaskets/parts, and pulled a valve. If they are all similar, we should be able to lap them and be good to go.
The valve shrouding on these fast burn heads is terrible. I might unshroud the valves a bit and smooth out the combustion chambers. I might thin out the valve bosses too. Nothing crazy, just a little touchup.

Seen the GOAT engine in lots of onan generators and other makes. Fork lifts, tractors, SW48 sidewalk plows. You probably even rode a chairlift Skier that had a 300 as a back up engine. Think I've seen a Tucker Sno-Cat with it too.

We got the valves cleaned/lapped today. The intakes didn't need much, but the exhaust valves did. They were pitted and we got most of them out. No pit reaches across the seat and none of them touch to make a chain, so it should be just fine. They cleaned up real nice and minimal stem wear. The stem seals are still good, and new ones are a week out, so they're staying in there. I am going to do some grinding on the combustion chambers to smooth things out. I'm also going to remove casting flash, sharp edges, and unshroud the valves just a little.

My son has been helping and learning. He needs to know how to do this stuff because he wants to fix up/restore/street rod his great grandfather's 1935 plymouth pj deluxe. It will be his first car. The plan is to put a 300 on it, so working on the truck is great practice.

Made some progress on the grinding today. The combustion chambers ate done and the bowls/short sides are also done. I will do the valve guides and air injection humps tomorrow. I made up some dummy valves to protect the seats. They worked great. A fan was beneficial in keeping the grinding dust out of my face. I also set up one of those lamps like they have in the pixar intro. The peg fit perfectly in the head bolt holes so I could swivel it around as needed.
Here is the progress so far.

It's ready to go back together today. All ported and cleaned up with valves in it.i's back together. It sounds different....kind of a low throatyness.

We're seeing a little bit of a renaissance for the inline 6 lately. New Stellantis/Chrysler Hurricane engine, GM's 3.0L Duramax, BMW builds a couple great I-6s of course. GM was rumored to be playing with a twin-turbo I6 for trucks before going all-in on the 2.7L I4 and a new generation of V8's.

Where packaging is not an issue (larger vehicles), the I6 makes a lot of sense. Modern metallurgy gets around the issues with long cranks and high torque outputs. It's WAAAY easier to package a turbo I6, even twin-turbos, vs a turbo V6/V8 even when resorting to a hot V design. Personally, I think the packaging argument is pretty weak given BMW has been stuffing I6's (turbo I6's even) into tiny coupes for decades. The near perfect balancing also makes for surprisingly quiet vehicles, without having to use hydraulic engine mounts, or resort to frippery like electronic Active Noise Cancellation in the cabin.

Saw that the other day! Rear-biased AWD, and the engine is facing the correct direction!

I hauled a load with the truck yesterday. We were visiting family for easter and they sent me home with a cord of maple/elm. The first real load with the new head gasket.
It stayed nice and cool, even through the long steep grades. We split and stacked the wood today and it measured out to ~120 cu ft without the short pieces I am going to split into fire starters. So what you see on the truck is a full cord of wood, minus a couple of rounds.
