I have never greased a bar sprocket in my life. I was told all grease does is trap chit in them that wears them, the chain and the rails out. I wonder if a.) the bar is actually freezing, and b.) is the grease holding the water in….

Yep, bigger town about 20 miles from us, is still having municipal water problems...

I routinely grease all my bars and always have. Especially the long one when milling. Never worn out a tip either.

Just for giggles measure the thickness of the bar compared to your others. While they may be lightweight it’s possible they’re also thicker. I’ve found when the bar is too close a match for the kerf chips jam up under the chain and in the nose.

I’m in the same camp. I never grease the bar tips. I haven’t noticed anything that I would call premature failure either. Not sure there’s really a wrong answer though.

I prefer greasable bar tips because I like to blow out, sometimes along with brake cleaner the bearing and then grease it so it isn't running dry until the bar oil gets there.

    I was wondering the same.
Personally I'd put it up against a working bar and start measuring.
Something has to be different in dimensions or design.

Really? Sure seemed like a stupid troll question. Not really sure why you’d even care. If you were just being a slappy you might want to up your emoji game. Do truck u joints get bathed regularly in bar oil? Last time I check that was a no. I see you grease your bar tips… Good For You

I was cutting all day today and no issues again.

Are you sure you are using the proper chain gauge matching the bar?

Yes, but that's a legit question. I'm gonna do as suggested above and compare to the bars that seem fine. I got 2 different pitch and gauge bars that acted exactly the same.

    What kind of grease?
I don't have any greaseable bars, so I have never messed with it...I guess mine get lubed by whatever little bit of oil happens to slobber on them...which seems like it would have to be when its sitting, since the oil is being flung away when operating

I found some bar tip grease that I had around from years ago, whatever that is. I really don't think the tips are bad, they spin free and easy after they're cleaned out. I'm pretty certain that it's chips/sawdust along with moisture the jammed up the drivers. I've had that happen when noodling with the bar buried in stringy softer woods before, but not in a crosscut, and not to this extent. I'll do some comparing tomorrow and report back.

Was the wood green or dead standing? I guess what I’m wondering Adam is what was the likely moisture/water content of the wood. I think given your answers so far it seems likely that moisture freezing might be playing a role. Still seems pretty weird to me. I’d happily take the “junk” bars off your hands for a modest disposal fee, of course.

Wood was certainly green and also wet. I don't know about actual freezing due to it being 40+ when it happened yesterday on the .404 bar. Imma do a little measuring and chain swapping to see if I missed something obvious. I'll try the same setup in Oak too. We'll see.

I've got a pile of Tsmura bars, never greased a one. Got them DSCF0009.JPG DSCF0010.JPG DSCF0011.JPG for $38-42 each so I bought a bunch.
