I've never had an all steel stove. My first stove was a Woodstock Fireview. It had a 2.2 cu ft firebox. Our Beta Ideal Steel stove had a 3.2 cu ft firebox but threw out double the heat in less than half the time. I don't know if that answers your question or not but I'd assume the IS is more comparable to a steel stove.

Welcome to the site. You've come to the right place - a lot of beta testers for the Ideal Steel here. Beautiful stove by the way, and great photo.

That helps. We might be looking to go a little bigger after this winter but are concerned about getting roasted out of the stove room. We like the softer heat of the soapstone, so we may need to go with the PH if we upgrade. We'll see how the improved insulation does this year before we make a decision. Thanks for the info!

I wonder if the stone inside the stove gives off the same warmth Blue Merle was describing? Despite it being a steel stove, it's kind of the best of both worlds, just that the stone is on the inside.

Thanks for the compliment! We're getting the IS installed in September, and will be running the Progress Hybrid as well. I'll likely create a post with some comparisons in case you're trying to decide between the two. Our IS will have the soapstone liner, and the side panels as well. I frankly don't know if the firebrick option instead of soapstone would affect how quickly it throws off heat and retains it at the end. Gonna be an interesting winter!

Ill keep my eyes peeled for the thread on the comparisons. Thanks in advance!

I went bigger this year (PH) and would have went with the IS but it would have required some work to get it to fit. I picked my PH up yesterday and talked to the folks at Woodstock about the two stoves. The IS can be turned down lower and has a longer burn but the PH has a higher top end. The IS is a beast though I can tell you that, pictures on the web don't do it justice as to size, its one big honking steel stove, beautiful in the flesh (or steel).

There was no way to make it (IS) fit? even bringing the legs completely to the lowest setting?

no, it was still about an inch too high, its a big stove. I think having the higher top end of the PH will be better any way.

I'll second you on the impression you get when you see this stove in person. The PH just doesn't have the same effect on me, even though it's a big stove too. "Big honking" for the IS captures it perfectly.  The only bigger stoves I've seen are old kitchen stoves. And I'm very glad to see how beautiful the various custom stoves are looking, especially since it had its detractors early on at another site especially.

Can anyone give me the dimension from center of the top flue outlet to the back of the stove? I have a corner install and want to see how it will sit on the hearth.

For future use, you "start a conversation". For example, if I wanted to start a conversation (PM) with you, I could just click the mouse on your name (right under your avatar). That brings up another window and you then choose "Start a conversation" and you can start typing.
