I shall try my local online auction first. Quality used items can be had there. I'll just have to stop bidding on saws for a bit.....
Interesting, I may have to try this with one of my square filed chains. The combination may well shave some more time off of my buckin' around... I know the square filing cuts a lot faster too. I do a lot of plunge / bore cuts making candles and if that smooths that out some more, that would be awesome.
I did up slightly used Stihl PM3 full chisel chain today for this experiment. Removed the safety bumpers then did the mods listed in the first post. I haven't ran it yet. Probably won't until at Kevins GTG. I'll have a new Picco Super yellow chain with me in case this is a failure on my part. That lil air pencil grinder was the weapon of choice this time around. Disc for the rakers and heels and the stone for the rivets.
I saw a chain last week that was modified safety chain where they cut the bumper off but left a piece next to the raker and squared off the front of both. He said it helped push chips out of the cut and kept them from getting under the next cutter. I saw the chain cut and it was really moving the chips. I picked up a chain like it and will combine all the mods and see how it turns out.
What is the reason for clipping the heels? Help chips exit easier? Less weight? Both? That area shouldn't be touching wood as its lower than the working edge. I'm totally new to doing anything outside the norm on a chain so thats why I'm asking.
Thats what I was thinking because it opens up the area they "squirt" out of. I probably should test mine before the GTG.
