I looked at the stock picture and it does not seem familiar. I almost think the saw did not have the heat shield to begin with but I'm not 100% sure.

It's a pretty distinct heat shield with those 3 protruding nubs so I feel like I would have remembered handling it and it does not look familiar at all. I thought perhaps I got something mixed up with the 660 but that heat shield looks completely different.

If I end up buying a new one and finding the old one I'll be pizzed for sure!!!

What I ended up doing was just installing the muffler and the gasket just so I could start it up and see what's what.....and it pretty much just started right up. The carb is already factory pre-adjusted so there's only about a half a turn of adjustment available and I put it about halfway.

Oil pump is working well and this saw has a ton of compression and definitely bit back without the decomp pressed in when trying to start it.

Looked at our 460 and it’s got a heat shield along with a smashed muffler

I believe that’s a hiway muffler on the 460. OEM has the screen on the inside and doesn’t require a screw. I’m not certain what pitch the threads are on it or if it’s just a sheet metal screw.

Yeah I’m still interested in the cylinder. P.m. me a couple pics and I’ll decide from there if you will

His muffler is the same as mine and you are correct, the screen is on the inside. I'm getting my mufflers and saws all jumbled up. Heh heh.

I do believe both are oem stihl. According to this parts diagram there were 3 versions and we have the middle version.

So I didn't lose the spark arrestor...but I did either lose the heat shield or there wasn't one to begin with (i.e. it fell off or someone forgot to reinstall it). Thanks for checking Chud

Man this 460 is just as hard to pull as the 660. You could tear your arm off if you're not careful.

I can barely make a grip with my right hand at the moment. A couple of pulls forgetting the decomp popped itself back out and here I am.

I'll take some pics and send it your way today. Thanks @huskil

460 mufflers have an internal screen with tabs that fold over it to hold it in. The dual port cover has a screw as in the top picture. Not that it’s an issue. I’ve never had a problem with hiway mufflers.

OEM 460 mufflers look like this

    DF896D7A-62EE-48FF-A2EE-5BF494B5E491.jpeg

The 044/440 has the same muffler but without the baffle and it has a slightly different deflector on it just for reference. I’m not certain if all 460’s had the cooling plate in them or not. I would put it in if I had one, but it’s not in all of them, so I don’t believe it’s an issue

    1. Heat shield for muffler installed along with the Hyway dual port. The muffler was a little rusty inside. Not cool.
    2. Larger AM dog spike set installed. Man these are legit. Not thin at all. Super heavy duty. Compensates for the light powerhead and the 28" bar. Now the saw doesn't fall forward on the ground.
    3. New MS460 nameplate. I need to put a dab of hot glue on there. One side is popping up.
    4. Rolling chain catch installed. Since I had originally ordered the metal one I just left it on there as well.

Can't wait to test it out today. Going to tune it according to MasterMech's video to the letter.

I have to clean up my bench.

Stock inner dog vs larger one.

Thanks man. I bucked up the rest of the hickory logs. I still need to noodle 3 of the rounds. It was damm hot yesterday so I ran out of gas (get it?).

I had the GoPro out so I'm going to edit the footage. I think I set the H jet too rich as it bogged down a little bit and also was revving up a little higher after WOT (3200rpm vs 2500rpm). But overall I'm super stoked because it didn't blow up! :D I also sprayed some brake cleaner in the clutch and flywheel area to make sure them seals were not leaking and fingers crossed it passed that test.

I still have the limited in the carb adjustment screws so I may remove those since this is going to be my saw - and nobody is going to use it except for me!

Here are a few pics for now.

I don't know what species that wood is , but it Looks Hard !!
All nice and swept up . I like the bark (rounds) !
The 460 is a Great saw. I know lots of guys want to juice them up a lot. And I have one that is juiced and hot.
But, that's 1 out of 5 that I've had and cut timber with. And that's fallin old growth timber with 32 and 36" bars with 8 tooth sprockets and semi skip chisel ground chisel chain. They are just a great saw.

Yeah it's still on the shelf, I haven't had time to deal with it yet.

Yeah it's hard alright! Hickory! First time ever getting it talk about being thrown directly into the fire!

I do have to tinker with the carb a bit more for sure. Also it was like 95 degrees out that first day....I just saw a video of a guy who put a larger jet into the carb to match the "stock" jet that you get from an overseas version of the 460. But I don't think I need to do that.....Gonna see how it goes with just the dual port muffler for now.

I wish I could do more with the bark but I just can't think of anything to do with it...

Cut it into slabs and let it dry, mix it in with the wood. Burns hot. It doesn't break down or rot like some other bark. I used some hickory bark to fill in holes in the woodyard, drive over it, been there close to 2 years. Tough stuff.

I thought only us northern guy were negatively affected by that kind of heat.
Once it hits 80° in the shade here. I'm done .
If bark is dried, it burns Good !

I wish I had taken pictures when I was bushlin on Dall Is. That would give a view of what can be done with a stock 460 Stihl with 36" bar. Western Hemlocks up to 6' across the stump. Sitka Spruce up to 8' perpendicular to the face. Granted, a bigger saw would have cut faster. But 25 to 40 thousand board feet in 6 1/2 hours , fell, limbed and bucked. Ain't bad for that size saw.

Yup. 6 days a week all season long. Or actually until I tramp. I tramped that camp cause I didn't like how they kept the workin men separated from everything.
No commisary, absolute Crap cell coverage. I got a cell phone that the bull buck told me would guaranteed work. And NUTHIN ! Not a single bar of service.
I had to bumm a phone in the evenings so I could call my wife. And somehow I got something like dysintery. I lost 17 lbs in 14 days. And not just from hard work.
The bull buck was kinda bipolar. They wanted good grade bucking but wanted us to bushel. I Hate counting limbs !!! Just Hate it. And the wind blew Every Day ! Swirling around. Worst, most dangerous wind I've ever cut in ! Every strip had sometimes 2 , 100+ ' cliffs in it. Little finger benches. V notches. And the ground was full of holes. Some of them limestone sink holes that were hundreds of feet deep.
Oh ya , and we had to crew boat from camp to the sale. We were staying at the Columbia Helicopters camp in View Cove. But cutting in Cocoa Harbor.
And it snowed every day. Or almost every day.
Wading thru crotch see snow to get from tree to tree. When I couldn't fall one close enough to the next tree.

My wife hated me being there. And I got to hating being there. Time for a plane ride.
But nice big fat , tall timber.
All I had for saws when I got the job was a 372 and a 460 Stihl. But I was running close to perfect chains. I could still see my corner real well when I was grinding chains.

Me too! Here's the list of terms I have no idea about!

Tramp. Bull buck. Bushel. Cliffs. Finger benches. Crew boat. Counting limbs.

But it sounds like a pretty darn exciting thing to do minus the negatives.

Here's the video I saw re: swapping out the .68 for a .74/.76 jet on the MS460.
