I just stuffed the ceramic wool insulation up into the throat of the chimney and also used a similar idea, except with large SS hose clamps to keep it at the top. I would think metal would be best, but it's probably kinda a pita to work in that area. I think a 2 piece thin steel sheet with a half circle at end will work. One of these days I'm make one for mine. I haven't had any issues by not having the block off, but it will be best to use one. I don't notice any drafts, but I have a fire pretty much 24/ 7 so a draft would be tough to notice.

I went with a 5.5” liner in my installation. I could of fit a 6” but wanted to insulate so I went with 5.5” and whatever the thinnest insulation was(.25 maybe?). It drafts extremely well and I’ve had no problems. It’s approximately 23’.

Thanks, I'll call around tomorrow. My roofing contact does not use what I'm looking for so I'll try insulation companies and the stove dealer I buy pellets at, then try to corral my 'roofing contact' to pick it up lol.

Got the insert installed today. Not difficult at all. Dad stuffed the fireblock insulation up in and around the liner at the base and some around the top. Started small paper fire first and everything looked good, so we went ahead with a wood fire. A bunch of pine kindling and then two small piece of mulberry. I brought him a big arm full to burn. All seems well.

Looks good. What did you end up doing with the liner?

    5.5” stainless flex pipe.

Can anyone advise on thermometer location to gauge burn temps? We have it here but I’m skeptical.

If I put it in the middle, the blower outlet will be going over it.

Air intake is set at minimum and stove is cruising right above 500 at that spot. Should I get something to connect to the liner a few inches up from stove connection?

Nice. I went 5.5 too some could insulate. Sorry I’m no help on the thermometer, I’ve never had one on my insert. Thought about it once but never did get one.

With an insert, that's about what you can do for thermometer placement.

Looks nice, looks like it is choochin' nicely.
