Tractor splitters are a catch 22.

Either the tractor doesn't have the hydraulic flow to run the unit at low (quiet speeds) and the engine must be run at high rpm - negating the noise advantage.

Or, a large PTO pump (oversized to provide adequate flow at low RPM) and a reservoir must be fitted which usually negates any significant cost advantage over a self-powered unit.

PTO pumps that provide equivalent flow to self-powered units at rated PTO/Engine speed are really silly. Then there is no cost, or noise advantage. :loco:

I was with you until you said there was no noise advantage, I completely disagree. I don't think any air cooled engine running at 3600 rpm vs a diesel running at 2600 rpm rated speed are even close. There is no load on the diesel ayways lol.

Everybody makes good points my input agrees with (1) tractor hydraulics are slow (2) most setups I sold were a pto powered pump @17-20 gpm and the splitters worked good they also had a standard valve on the splitter to operate (3) the customers that bought them ended up buying self contained splitters after a couple of years for various reasons mostly because they wanted the tractor to move the wood when splitting and tow a wagon with the split wood the last was the cost a good pto splitter with a pump and tank is not much cheaper good luck with your choice JB

I'd happily listen to a Honda/Subaru singing at 3,600 over the Deere 2640 I ran as a kid. That thing was hearing protection -required-. Point is, some tractors are quiet, some are not. And the tractor is generally going to produce "better" noise than the one-lung. Even an old Farmall running at 1500 rpm is going to make enough fan noise to make conversations shouted rather than spoken.

That's not my experience with my 3039. As I said in a post above, I can have a conversation with my family around easily.

Just to throw this out there….
    Tractor run log splitters
I’m happy either way. It was fine when it was self powered and I like it just as much now when it’s on the tractor. Guess it’s a preference and all about what your circumstance is.

Well, to be fair I have unlimited use of the tractor at pretty much anytime. I keep my stack of logs there at the farm property and do my splitting there as well. I bring the pick-up over to load and bring back to my city house.

My neighbor has a 50HP JD with rear remote hydraulics and a brandy new top of the line splitter. My Huskee 22 cost 1/4 the price of the splitter and will run circles around it.

Like, he's running it on the SCV's or it has a Power Beyond kit and a valve on the splitter? The former is a terrible way to run a splitter on a smaller tractor.

Sound even cooler if it was run by an Allis Chalmers. Those old 4 cylinder AC motors had a "bark" when the governor opened.
