What i do for burping air is run with cap off till thermostat opens and ensuring i have heat out the vents, if it heats at idle it should have all the air burped
Another thing that helps is a funnel that fits tightly on the fill port partially filled

I ran that burp bucket snug in the radiator opening, ran it full throttle a couple times, and it filled up quick.

I went with a aftermarket thermostat, and shoulve tested it first. Not easy to get to, especially in 17deg weather.

I "think" i burped it enough..... Was finally either boiling or releasing air.

Depending how in depth you want to go, a leak down test would tell you if its a head issue,
Yank the plugs and pressurize the cylinder with valves closed, if you get bubbles or a geyser out the rad you have definite proof

Buddy at the local ford dealership used th open the thermostat by hand and hold it partially open with an aspirin tablet, let him fill it much easier and pill would just dissolve

I agree, start with cheap/easy stuff first
Seen too many young techs go down a diagnostic rabbit hole when easy stuff was overlooked

I shouldve boiled or torched the thermo before i spent all this time putting it in. It was wicked tight with the gasket around it. I could barely keep it in place.

My first thought is that the impellor is gone off the WP shaft...but the intermittent thing kinda blows that...and you keep getting air...its possible that a head gasket is leaking compression into the coolant system...would explain how you keep getting air. Do you have a radiator pressure tester? That would tell the story

If you do, then often you can see the pressure pulses on the gauge
