Nope, not that season yet, but maybe Christmas did come early this year. We got to do a tree removal job for a neighbor. He had 5 trees to do. Not far from our house. Only 1 was a bit concerning. Quoted him $100/tree, used tractor grapple to pile brush on his pile, load logs on dump trailer for us...:saw::tree::tractor::emptywallet:
We had this magnolia tree 0413211025_HDR.jpg
    Hemlock tree 0413211025a_HDR.jpg
Red cedar and this holly 0413211214.jpg
    And this leaning holly.
    0505211243_HDR.jpg 0505211243a_HDR.jpg
Had to drop it between the shed and fence. 0505211302.jpg 0505211302a.jpg
That grapple sure made it nice with all those prickly leaves... 0505211320_HDR.jpg 0413211248_HDR.jpg
    Brush pile really grew 0413211331_HDR.jpg
Got it all cleaned up 0505211412.jpg
Got a nice amount of logs. Don't know how the magnolia and hemlock will be for wood. Hope the holly is as good as the chart says, better than red oak and dries faster. 0413211401_HDR.jpg
    Second load all holly. 0505211535.jpg

Nice job T.Jeff Veal. I have a small magnolia limb available from the ice storm, had been meaning to ask you about magnolia for firewood, assumed and thought for sure you would have had experience with that one already! I'll process it and stash somewhere...it's got to be better than a snow ball!

Manageable sized trees to fell. Nothing like getting paid to use a chain saw and getting the firewood too. Great job gettin' it done.

Thanks buddy. That leaner had me a little nervous, wasn't sure how good the hinge wood was gonna hold. I put the grapple against it with a bit of pressure, cut my face notch clean, started on the felling cut, set hinge on leaning side, worked my way back, tapped in a wedge, finished cut, leaving hinge thicker on the off side, drove in 2nd wedge. Got on tractor and gave it a slight nudge. Sure didn't want to fix a fence...got over 30' of logs off that tree.

About 1/2 what the tree service was gonna charge him, but he was gonna grind stumps too. We were done in a few hrs. Some of them probably didn't take 30 mins or so to drop, buck move limbs and load logs. And they have 3 big pecans to come down in the near future...

It's supposed to be the same BTU as beech. The last time I burned any it was in a fireplace. They're no fun to have in the yard when you have kids running around barefoot.

My dad has one, the wood is pretty soft as far as branches go. I can't say it's much different than walnut? That Holly though...I've got a bunch of rounds not split yet. That'll happen this summer.

T.Jeff Veal that did look like fun and like always. Your work is clean and orderly.

I burned a truckload of holly this past winter. It did dry pretty fast and burned great. It catches a flame easy, it's hot and coals up nice.

Thanks for confirming that. I put a small chunk in the fire but then left to go do something so I didn't know how well it burned as the fire burned out when I returned. Too small to last long but it was perfectly sized to try out.

Nice job on getting those trees on the ground. I am curious about the Magnolia also. I used too see a lot of those in Calif. They produce a nice flower.
