This started with my tree ID thread a few weeks back Tree ID, it Fooled Me!
White oak variety and left it to rot as it seemed rather punky. I bucked a few off the other day to split and check it out. The entire heartwood was soft too. Ive seen standing dead barkless oak (red and white) with no sapwood and the same on the ground that was solid, but cant recall encountering oak that was this bad all the way through. The X27 sank into it like a sponge. IMG_4639.JPG IMG_4638.JPG
I have the other twin tree to fell which is much larger and dead.

Yessir that is campfire wood. I see this in my woods here in So Wisconsin but only on white oak. Never red oak. Standing white oak will punk with the bark on.

Unfortunately I cut up two smaller trees like that last fall 10"-14" diameter. I don't think there is going to be much BTU value. Will burn in campfire/garage.

They killed some oak trees (Bur) here by spraying them, almost all the trees rotted standing, as in your case the saw was halfway through the tree before u could blink.

That sucks, oak don't normally do that.
Probably not good for burning in a inside stove, I like burning wood like that in my OWB early or late season, toss a few split in half like that and some solid wood on top, makes a lot of nice coals.

    Yep, me too.
That last monster I cut had it at the base, probably 2-3 rounds towards the center.

I get some of that every year. Usually it’s a long dead tree a customer waited too long to have taken out of their yard. That goes right into my owb

Any ants involved? I’ve seen some BIG oaks like that lately and it usually involves ants. I have a theory that ant urine or other poisons the tree through and through eventually.
This guy especially. Wood is punked all the way to the top. Even the branches punked out. Whole lotta nuthin in that tree.
Pic was just the spar taken for another purpose. All the wood above is that yellowish punk. Weird to see them rot all the way through with the bark still attached. Fairly certain this tree had leaves last year.

This red oak blew down 4 years ago. It was hollow but I was sure I’d get a cord and a half out of the top half of tree. I was way off! Barely a face cord was good. It’s not a total loss cause it’s been growing chicken of the woods mushrooms the last two years. 7E89C47F-AA10-47E7-9533-F6C2FF7B2141.jpeg

The rounds i bucked were from 10' off the ground. Looked like the whole tree was bad.
