That's actually a really good point. We farm wind where I'm at.

There are folks running 2 key dampers if necessary. More food for thought.

Man am I glad I got a Sooteater now! I cleaned out last night in less than an hour. It makes this whole thing a little easier to deal with.

You insert the soot eater through the clean out door?

I had to. There's actually a funny story from last night.
I had the stove pipe apart in prep for install. I took each section apart and cleaned them. I put the horizontal straight and elbow back into thimble on the side with the stove in the family room and then went to the other side to the utility room where the clean out is. Towards the floor i have the cleanout door and at about 4 foot I have a flue stop that an old furnace was connected to. I decided to try and put the sooteater in the flue stop and have the vacuum at the door. When I went into the flue I started up the chimney and then reached some resistance and then it gave. So I kept going. A moment later I hear my son in the next room yell "holy crap". I had actually entered the stove thimble and exited the pipe and elbow grabbing the grocery bag that I put over the stove pipe and was spinning it around in the family room.

Going up through the clean out door solved that problem.

More to consider, you will have to add a piece of liner to the bottom of the “t” to get to your clean out door. Maybe that’s obvious.

I figured it would be the case, but its a good reminder. I can use a rigid liner there. Ive got the room in that section.

Not sure if you could go with unlined for that section or not. I’d be inclined to go non insulated. I’m cheap!

Me too, I was thinking since its below the thimble, the main reason for it is to guide the sooteater into the liner. I'm wondering if it needs to be capped. I imagine it would be a good idea since its not a huge expense and to keep the system "closed".

For the 3 bucks or whatever I’d run a cap.
    Edit,
Looking at the kit pics it looks like the t comes with a cap that should be used.

Second fire. Medium fire. Almost up to a good temp.

Wow, y'all been chatty today!
Depends on how hard it is to install...if the chimney is hard to access from the top, I would want to only do it once...plus, if it goes in hard, it will probably come out harder...and could get damaged...and if you are like me, once it is installed, the chances of pulling it to insulate later are probably pretty slim if everything seems to be working ok...thing is, with insulation, its not just about performance, it very well may save your house if there were ever a chimney fire....one of those "its OK, until its not" things...
That's how mine is...I had to extend from the bottom of the tee to get down to my cleanout door....I had the liner supply place modify the bottom of the tee and the cap that was to go on the bottom of the tee so that the liner would fit over the tee and the cap fit over the bottom of the liner then...I slide a couple bricks under the cap to hold it up in place.

Another option that I have used is to buy a pre-insulated liner...its a SS flex liner with 1/2" insulation blanket on it, and then there is another flex liner on the outside too...which can be SS, or aluminum. They run a bit more money, but the advantage is that the OD is a bit less than it would be on a liner that you insulate, and it will take more abuse going in (without damage) than a regular insulated liner will.

Yes. Do this. It's the easiestv way to fix the problem. As stated before, when you go green the 6" round to the bigger rectangular flue, it will create issues where creosote can form. You could insulate the liner later if need be.

After looking into it, I think this is the route I will take when I get the budget for it. Sounds like the better solution for my situation.

I did however buy a spot light and mirror so I can keep an eye on the chimney. It will also help me get a good gauge on my sweeping. Works and looks pretty good.
