Production Woodstock IS

About three years or so....

 

My Cat was not working correctly... Wife had to keep the air going quite strong to keep wood burning. It did ok when the bypass was open, but sluggish when the cat was engaged. I got to thinking, "I bet that cat is plugged" Let it cool a bit last night and sure enough it was plugged with white ash. So I put the back-up it and it worked quite well. !!!!

 

What length splits are you guys using in the IS stove? I know the specs list 22" as the max....

When I buck my own rounds I do 16" but when tree guys give me wood it's all over the place.

 

The most I have ever gotten out of a combustor has been two years. Of course the combustor(s) was not outright failed at that point but it was sluggish enough that I had trouble keeping it lit and still having the stove produce enough heat overnight. The harder a cat. stove is used, the longer the cat. will be useful. Of course the big advantage to a cat. stove, at least IMO, is that they can be used running low and slow while still burning very clean and efficiently; if someone pushes a stove fairly hard all the time, honestly I think a non- cat. would serve as well and be less expensive to use as there would be no cat. to have to replace in the first place.

 

Great! You could do a little write- up on the changes if you want to kill some time and inform the rest of us unwashed masses (who do not yet have a newer type IS stove). Mebbe even a photo or two of the changed parts?

 

I like 16 load stove front to back.. then 2 larger pieces across front by glass stoves full.

 

BDF stove came back all new gaskets, sled basically everything except cat redone looked like new

mine was hooked up and running in 2 hours so I forgot pics!! chance04 might have better ones he sent his ash pan they cleaned that too!!

I like 16” loaded north south. You can still load longer splits east west but I think north south flames up faster on coals.

 

That last pic you can see a clear difference between the refurb finish and the top I kept.
I wish I had sent the whole mess back lol.

So they just put a whole new faceplate right over the previous one. The weld it on? and then weld new door hinges on the new plate?

Wow! That is awesome! No doubt, Woodstock is a class act from start to finish from top to bottom. I've only known 3 comppanies in my entire life so dedicated to customer satisfaction.

Regretting not getting mine sent in sooner. Oh well, it shall get done next spring. Stoves are looking fantastic!

 

They also installed a new "updated" sled and installed a new sled gasket.
Mine was showing some age and I certainly wasn't looking forward to replacing that. Now I won't have to, at least a few more years!

 

I did get my new IS installed over the weekend, with four of us and the dolly it wasn't bad at all.

I did remember to snap some pictures of it as I was putting it back together. Pictures of the inside of the firebox, upper right and left corners with shielding. Secondary plate. Top down view with top and sled removed. Top of fire box with sled ramps. Top and bottom of sled. Bottom of the cat heat shield. And the first curing fire.

I've had it going (and the furnace off) ever since, and so far I'm impressed (especially in comparison to the old stove). After small fires Saturday and Sunday to cure the paint I loaded it to the top with mixed splits Sunday night at ~8, brought it up to temp, closed the bypass and damped it right down to the second notch. Let it sit and cruise (with the windows open upstairs at times, outside temps were up there) and went 24 hours with coals enough to light it right back off Tuesday night with no issues.

I'm sure things will change when temps drop and I have to start pushing the stove a little to keep up, but if I can normally load at night when I get home from work, and again in the morning before I leave again, with out my wife having to deal with it much or having to light a cold stove when she gets home from work (3-4 hours before me, normally) It will be a vast improvement over the old stove and I don't think Ill have much of anything to complain about!

VTWoodchuck 12 hours is no problem with that stove.. Half my family is in Bridgewater so your wife will be warm

 

If you don’t mind me asking how many sq.ft are you heating?

 

It was the stove guy's dolly, but I believe it was. I thought it was slick the way the winch was set up to lift/lower the forks of the dolly. we were able to use it to lift the stove out of the back of my pickup and wheel it straight inside... way easier than most of the schemes that I had envisioned.
