Hey y’all, just curious if this is hickory or walnut. And if it’s hickory, would it be ok to smoke with it? Thanks y’all.
Well, the little bug holes are indicative of hickory but dang the size of those growth rings tells me it’s a carrot LOL
walnut, i believe. Don't smoke with it... Or use it for firepit wood... unless you like your eyes to water... It ok for the wood stove, though.
I say walnut based on dark heartwood. Walnut has a center pith too just like ash does. Check your other splits Joe Seaton
Bark looks off for Walnut, Heart wood looks like BW. A round that size should have a thicker bark I would think. Leaf pics?
I keep looking at this and one second say walnut then I say naw, looks more like tulip poplar. The bark and the cross cut just don't look like any walnut I've ever cut or worked with.
Tbh when I first looked at it and looked at again I was thinking it’s a bigger tree of heaven. I call them Copels, because that’s what the country folks call them. The width of the rings tells me it’s a fast growing weed tree. I think I’ve seen/cut big or dead tree of heaven with discoloring in the wood. The Kentucky Coffee tree I’m familiar with is a slow grower. I’ve known the same grove of Kentucky Coffee trees since 92 and they have not grown much in that time. The bark on the tree in this thread almost looks scaled. The Kentucky Coffee has defined furrows. Anyway, I didn’t chime in because I had too many ?’s
Bark looks like hickory. I've cut some hickories that have the dark center like that....it's a different dark than walnut.
