All I've used in the last 30yrs has been from tsc or rural king. Before that I used straight 30w with stp in it for a tackifier.

I probably go through at least 20 gallons of bar oil a year. If I saved only $5 a gallon, that’s $100. The last time I bought a 24” bar for my echo 8000, it was $80 something. I’m not buying a bar every year. I used to buy Stihl oil for $14 a gallon from my local shop. I now but TSC oil for either $7 or $8 a gallon. At those price points, I am saving more money by buying cheap oil and it’s not even close.

Does oil pump life change with expensive oil? I but gallons at Walmart. When I was a kid, dad had us use engine oil.

Canola oil works fine. I've used it for years. If you cut in an area that is an environmental zone, you often are not allowed to use regular bar oil. Canola is fine. If you are hesitant, you can use it to cut your regular bar oil 50/50. The only thing I've heard is that the canola oil will get rancid after a while in your saw. I typically run my saw until the tank is empty which means there is little if any bar oil left. I've never had it smell so either it doesn't get rancid or I use the saw enough for it not to matter.

I know chain bar oil isn't that expensive but I have a few quarts of used oil from the last time I changed the oil on my mower. Is that ok to use in the saw?

The cheapest I can find. I've never burnt up a bar or chain, they wear as they should. Anything else is waisted $$

I did it for a decade. No problems. Was finally shamed into buying cheap bar oil. Saw stays cleaner. No noticeable difference in wear.

Years back my late father used drain oil in his old McCollough saw. I personally wouldnt do it today but if it works for you, great!

I always figured it was good enough for my engine until the moment I drained it out.
And I learned it from my father too.

I only use Stihl winter grad oil , I use it over Husqvarna oil because the stihl container pours better . Used a gallon of Wallmart brand once it destroyed a new bar after one chain !

It dawns on me that if I had a decent saw, with a long bar, and used it frequently - the sticky oil would likely do better than used motor oil.

With my current saw... I would feel fine putting glue in oil tank. The worst thing that could happen is that I would get a new saw!

I was at HD also today and I saw a ton of splitters out front. I hope those customers aren't starting to split their pile for this winter, they missed the boat.

I usually use Husky or house brand from TSC, Runnings, Lowe's ect. The snowplow shop I go to is also a Stihl, Redmax (Jonsered :() dealer. I'll grab oil from them if I'm there and need it.

First, welcome to FHC!!! You and JackHammer :handshake: If all you can get is the summer or heavy bar oil, "cut it" with a small amount of Diesel or Kerosene. About a 1/8 to
1/4 cup to a gallon works well. Any of the "box store" bar oils are fine but I have noticed TSC's oil can be thick. I do like the Husqavrna oil but found it $$$, sometimes.
