My vote is either what eatonpcat said or use 1x4

1x4 is good, 2x4 is better, depending on the length of screw. All good advice Horkn, but if I were building it...

Either way your roof will be fine!

I normally use 2x4's so the screws don't come thru, but I had those 1x4's.

So what was all the talk of going 18" c/c then? I thought that was to avoid the need to use purlins?
Of course I suppose that would work better if the joist and the metal are laid perpendicular to each other...if not, then yes go 24" c/c on the joists and 18" (or whatever) on the 2x4 purlins...have to add up to see if there is a major cost difference I guess...

Just answering questions as they are posed...If 2x4 purlins are used, I would go with 24" c/c joist as stated earlier! Couple beautiful sheds built using 1's...So take your pick!

I made my own trusses and put them on 48" centers! Yes, you read right! :eek:o_O With 2"X 4" purlins across the top with 1/2 plywood and dimentianal shingles! Hasn't gone anywhere and survived 3 Nor-easters, a half/Hurricane snow, "verry little" and pounding winds all winter long. The way I saw it was, I wasn't building the space shuttle, just a wood shed. I did put hurricane straps on it. So far so good. :D

I have 1.5" screws. So. I'm thinking that necessitates 2x4's. So the screws don't poke through.
Doing 24" joists, with 2x4 purlins on top. Screw the roof panels to the 2x4's instead of the joists will make it easy as you said. I'll have to reread all the AWESOME advice( seriously thank you all!) on this thread as to what spacing for those purlins if I missed it.

    Pu$$y!!

48" c/c is pretty much standard pole barn construction.

 :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:  Exactly! And as far as the "kitty cat thing". We've been known to hit 70 to 90 mph Nor-easters here:eek:. I like the roof "I" built and don't wanna do it again, so I'll pet my "Kitty Cat"... :D

My cutting buddy sent me this...

Inside of a pole shed they are renting for work. 8' center to center and 2' between purlins. Resized_20200807_092922.jpeg Resized_20200807_092816.jpeg
    Seems kinda wimpy.

Sounds like one of those sheds you see advertised in the back of the farm and car trader magazines... national company that comes in and just builds to a price point...

24" cc will be 5) 2x4's per bay roof. Sounds good to me.

One more vital question everyone. Especially with the snow we get up here. Is a 2' drop enough front to back over a 10' long roof? Or should I drop the back 4x4s down a half foot more? I've got a feeling that the dark green metal roof will have any snow fly off even with the 2' drop over the 10' front to back of the roof.
