My 2 cents...I'd just go 24" for a shed. You'll be nailing furring strips to the rafters, so that's what the steel gets attached to mainly. On cutting the roofing...shearing it (with tin snips, or full on shears) is highly recommended...supposedly the cutting action smears some galvanizing onto the raw steel edge of the cut...keeps the rust at bay longer.
Gotcha. I plan on just overlapping the little bit extra under the other layers. By my figures, there's about 1.5' of wasted roofing per bay. Over the span of the entire shed that's only about $40. Thinking that might be more trouble to cut than just overlap it. Hmm.
Could just let a little extra overhang on each bay too...no harm in that. So you will be buying the panels already cut to length?
Yes. Buying pre cut to 10' length. I've got over hang planned in. 1ft all sides. I think going further than 1' would look weird.
He's calling my shed weird...lol... The shed floor 11'4" to the 4x4 post. Since I had 16' 1x4 stripping, I made the roof 5 panels wide, so it about 15'1" wide. I think it has 16-18" overhang, helps with elements (rain/snow) blow in
Lol. My roof line is different. The overhang the long way on mine had to go over the lower Bay's. That's why it would look weird.
Well 2x6's for the joists and I was thinking 2x4 for purlins. ?? I have a couple nice rough cut cedar 2x6 ( I think that's the size) I am planning on putting on the front of each bay as a nice looking end purlin.
Sounds good, I was looking at Jeff's shed and the purlins look to be 1x's and I would have suggested you put your joists @ 18" c/c so you could connect your roofing directly to the joists.
I think I see what you are saying. Yes, there'd be a couple more 2x6 joists per roof section, but overall less wood and fuss. All that is going to be done 8-10ft up in the air on ladders initially until I get one roof section up at least. Anything to make it easier. Unless I'm missing your point.
Yes, I used 1x4 for stripping (purlins?). That's what I had, spaced about 24"cc. Joist are 24"cc, hard to get between 16"cc. I was going to double the 1x's, but they were too crooked. It supports the metal better, IMO, and easier to get squared up.
Ok, worked on the shed quite a bit today. I'll post up pics later today. I've got a couple but questions about the roof joists,purlins...
Ok here's where we're at. The left bay is decked, all set to move to the roof. I threw up the braces. That cedar up to is not fastened, just to see what it looks like. I'll be using 2x6 all the way around at the top. The 2x4 in back was just to shore it up. So what's the take on screwing the roof fasteners ( proper self tapping rubber gasketed machine screws) into the ( 18" spaced) 2x6 roof joists and have 2x4 purlins underneath the joists, or space the 2x6 joists at 24", then run 2x4 purlins on top of the joists and screw the steel roofing into the 2x4 purlins? I'm waiting for the roofing to arrive, and will have the middle bay decked shortly, and the right bay I need to do the outer deck blocking. The way things are rolling, timing should be good with the roofing arriving maybe when I just get done with the roof structure.
I would use 2x4 purlins, it will give you more flexibility, you won't have to worry about fasteners and deck ribs being located exactly over a joist. In other words, 2x4 purlin over joists at 24 c/c
