Never take sass from anyone, unless its FIREWOOD!

Scored this sassafras from the next door neighbor of a guy who gave me some red oak last year. Third time ive cut on her property. Another tornado victim from two years ago. I was able to back down his yard to within 20' of rootball. 17" DBH. First pic red oak stump from last year. Sassafras (far left) proximity to oak

Tree was mostly off ground and no rot. Some fungi on limbs. I was able to peel some bark there. No insect damage yet, save for some live ants inside...very common in sassy. Tree lifted up slightly as i bucked toward rootball. Made it go a lot quicker.
Didnt think of metal til i spotted this ring laying on the ground close to a cut. (saw was turned off for pic)
Only last two cuts had rot.
170 & 261 made short work of it. Less than an hour and a half cut and load. Nice cool day with a stiff breeze made working conditions much more favorable. Felt like March not May!

Brought the load to my friends and split maybe 1/4 of it. Unloaded rest next to BL from last weekend.
Never had sassafras and BL side by side. Ive often referred to BL bark as "sassafras on steroids"!

The sassafras looks like it has a pretty thick and coarse bark.

The intentional typo was funny.

 

Bark is rather soft. Back of my PU is littered with it. Smelled great...kinda like root beer.

Sass is my favorite kindling wood, Splits easy, dries quick and lights up no problem. I save it whenever I can.

There was some conical shaped voids from woodpeckers. Matter of fact if you look at the "minion" picture you can see where i bucked through one. We have pileateds around here. Hear and see them on occasion in our woods. Never at our feeder or suet though. I observed one for over five minutes (not here at home) less than 20' away at ground level last month. Very cool!

 

Great stuff! Love me some sassafras. Might be the easiest splitting, best smelling wood there is, the only drawback that it's so soft it goes up like matchsticks. Burned about a cord of the stuff a few years ago and would love to get some more for kindling.

 

Ive recently discovered catalpa (thanks FHC) as a sassafras equivalent. Texture, weight, seasoning time are very similar as is the splitability (is that a word?) factor.

 

You can blame it on one of those typos again. Yes it is a word.
